Clerk Mae Tillman this morning prepared the following extract from the new rule which are quoted below: If a registrant ha a wife but no children und there are uch other sources of support available that the removal of the registrant will not de prive the wife of reasonable, adequate support, he goes in class one as not being included in any other division -A the schedule. "There are many registrants in this state who are married but without children and who are enjoying defer ment from military service under the above regulations, and who are occu pying positions of lucrative pay, and I into Jerry. whose wives are also employed in po sitions which pay very comfortable salaries of wages. At a meeting of draft executives of various states with the provost marshal on July 9, 1918 the foregoing ruling was made, in which the registrants having no de pendent other than a wife, be reclassi fied and placed in class one. In re classifying, other sources of support. including income from property, earn ings of the wife at employment which she is now engaged or in which she can readily become engaged, plus the allotment and government allow ance, should be taken into full consid eration." Men and Women at Horn Urged to Support Red X; Interesting Sidelights At the Front in France. Saturday, June 15, 1918. Dear Father: Here I am at last ith my battery now occupying a prominent position in one of the bus sector of the front in France. There i something doing every minute now, and thus far the show has been food. specially at night, thi being th time f day when the Americans and allies are giving the bosche hell. Airplanes fill th air, either bomb ng or scouting, while frequently our nachine and those of the enery clash .igh in the air, and the popping of he machineguns can be heard for -nany minutes. The artillery due! be .ween the big gun of the allied and nemy forces at night Is Inresaant, uid the steady boom can be heard for hours at a time. Often the darkness of night is brok n by the red flash of the guns, or th vhite light made by stars hall which n used for illumination of the ter -ain where the engagement is taking dace. Then, too, signal lights and -ocket-. often blaze forth, giving night ime on the front an American Fourth if July tinge. I went Into one church which had a '.arge shellhole over its front en--rance. 1 expected to find the interior in ruins and was quite surprised to find that it was intact there, the shell having passed through an attic ever 'he auditorium proper. Have seen -nany dwellings with ragged holes In their roofs, others with roofs gone and walls completely wrecked. In one place where w( spent con siderable time, I talked with Belgian women who with their children gen erally little tots fled from their homes and country when it was left torn and bleeding by the Hun during he early part of the war.
