ESTABLISHED N 1866 TUESDAY. AUGUST . 19 THE REAL SITUATION Of course there is no Amcric: army in France. Foch has no re serve. We cannot send any troops. Wan U-boats would sink troop ships. We cannot supply ammunition hmiin the U-boats have alrtadv aunk the freight ships. France ii rnimhvd. England is licked to a stand till All the Germans have to do, to win the war, is to smash through the French line and parade to Fans, men tun and kick the English into tne North Sea and gobble up the channel ports. w, l-now all this because it is what the German general staff believed uo to the moment the last Hun drive started, and what they told their own ivuinU- Surelv the ereatest military r i - i experts in the world, employing the cleverest, best organized secret serv ice ever created, would not make a mistake about it! And surely the German leaders would not lie to their own people. The inevitable conclusion is that the Crown Prince is now eating his din ners in Paris, and Hindenburg is bombarding London from Calais with a battery of super-atrocity guns, and Lloyd-George is begging for peace at any price, and the United States is getting ready to pay the Kaiser $50. 000,000,000 indemnity. ANOTHER JOB FOR WILSON John Dillon, the nationalist leader, in a speech in the house of commons has proposed that the Irish problem be referred to the arbitration of Pres ident Wilson. We may safely say that this par ticular task is one which the Presi dent, however great his desire to do an ally a favor and apply democracy to. Ireland, will dodge gracefully but conclusively. Th President happens to have his hands full already, without going out of his way to settle a political-religious-racial problem that has baffled British and Gaelic statesmanship for two or three centuries. Having, ac cording to his own characterization, a "one-track mind," he prefers to give his undivided attention to the en grossing American job of licking Ger many.
