MONDAY. APRIL 23. 1917. BALFOUR'S WARNING "Realise, people of America, that you face a real fight. And be prepared for great imlividn.il sacrifice for it will be de manded." In the above words Arthur J. Bal four, British Foreign Secretary ami head of the British Commission which has just landed on United States soil, sounded a warning to the American people that our war with German will be no international "joy ride." It is serious business that brings the great British statesman and diplo mat to our shores and it is a serious note that he sounds to the American public on the day of his arrival In another paragraph Balfour says: "The war will be of long dura tion. It will tax our resources of men: it will require all of. our fi nancial strength; it wilt com mand all of our commercial and industrial energy: it will involve the individual effort of every true American. Time will bring the war home to you as it has done to us." The British Foreign Secretary did not brave the perils of the Atlantic for the purpose of frightening the United States. He came for the very- def inite purpose of working out a prac tical scheme of cooperation in the great task of breaking the backbone of the Prussian military system. He has no illusions in regard to the weak ness of the common enemy. He makes no impossible promises of a speedy victory. H merely tells ns that our war with the Central Powers will tr.T our resources of men and our finan cial strength and asks us to prepare for the sacrifice. If the message which Bilfour brings to America does not impress the members of the United States Sen ate and House of Representatives it will be because their ears are deaf to reason or because their eyes are blinded with pacifism. Cansm Committee Busy E. C. Roberts commenced work this morning in North Albany obtaining signatures of the growers who will agree to grow the products for the new cannery. J. C.
