The committee in charge of the sub scription list completed the work yes terday. In all there has been sub scribed something over $9000.00. The establishment of a cannery here under the management of an exper ienced man like Paulhamus of Puyal I up. is one of the biggest things that has ever come to this community. Last Tuesday she attended the closing exeaeiaea of School Dis trict No. 122, south west of Lacomb. Lucius Groves, the teacher at this place, had an all day program arrang ed and a fine time was bad. Wednesday Mrs. Cumminga visited the Lacomb school and at District K M. All day Thursday was spent in the Lebanon Schools. Friday another closing exercise waa attended at School District No. 80, Sand Ridge, Miss Vera Merchant, in structor. Another all day program was observed. Under the present arranKement no stock subseriotion of bonus of anv kind is required from the growers, all that is asked is that they produce the stuff necessary for oper ating the cannery. Besides Mr. Paul hamus offers about a cent more per pound for all fruits, berries and veg etables that he cans than does any other cannery. He realises that the producer cannot be expected to con tinue to produce the stuff for the cannery unless he can do it at a profit. Arrangements have been made by the committee in charge, with Mr. C. t. Roberts, to go among the fruit growers and farmers and see what amount of produce the irrowcrs are willing to contract to raise. Mr. Paul hamus has insisted that they shall make a specialty of raising three kinds of berries and one vegetable, namely: the Wilson strawberry, the Munger Black Respberry, and the Phenomenal berry, and the Refugee bean. VINCENT'S INTERNE Dr. Earl Fortmiller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Win. Fortmiller, of this city, has been honored by an appointment as Interne at St Vincent's Hospital in Portland. .He moves into the hospital today and immediately asumes his new duties. The appointment is regarded as a distinct honor and an acknowledgment of Dr. Fortmiller' abilities. Apparently realizing the inequitable distribution of food caused strikes md the government is conducting a most searching mvctigation for hid den stores of food. Berlin dispatches disclosed that there was a house to house canvass, revealing already an "amazing quantity" of food. Summarizing the rumors, reports and known facts, it is evident that a general strike is spreading. Several hundred thousand men are still out and arbitration is being attempted. MAGDEBURG. April 21. The joint meeting of the Civil Re lief Committee of the Red Cross and the directors of the Associated Char ities, was held last evening at the Ho tel Albany, and was attended by every member and by Prof. C. W. Boetticher. Superintendent of the City Schools. Several acres of land have been placed at the disposal of the Joint com mittee and several citisens have indl rated their willingness to co-operate with the joint committee by advaacing funds with which to purchase seed and to hire teams to plow and prepare the land for seeding. The committee is very anxious to get in touch with the owners of vacant lots that may be used for garden or for growing potatoes and beans and the committee is equally anxious to get in communica tion with those who desire to avail themselves of the opportunity to use such land aa is placed at the disposal of the joint committee.
