The fruit cannery in Albany it now
an assured fact so far at the sub
scription of the capital stock it con
cerned. It is now up to the fruit
growers in this vicinity to decide
whether or not the eaaneiy building
shall be erected this year or next year.
The committee in charge of the sub
scription list completed the work yes
terday. In all there has been sub
scribed something over $9000.00.
The establishment of a cannery here
under the management of an exper
ienced man like Paulhamus of Puyal
I up. is one of the biggest things that
has ever come to this community.
With a strong group of business men
back oi the organization to give it
standing and to provide the necessary
funds for buying the machinery and
paying cash for the products as they
arc delivered, and with the Oregon
Electric Railway Company erecting
the building to house the cannery, and
providing satisfactory freight rates for
transporting the output from here to
Puyallup and eastward, there can be

by the growers. . Under the present
arranKement no stock subseriotion of
bonus of anv kind is required from the
growers, all that is asked is that they
produce the stuff necessary for oper
ating the cannery. Besides Mr. Paul
hamus offers about a cent more per
pound for all fruits, berries and veg
etables that he cans than does any
other cannery. He realises that the
producer cannot be expected to con
tinue to produce the stuff for the
cannery unless he can do it at a profit.
Arrangements have been made by
the committee in charge, with Mr. C.
t. Roberts, to go among the fruit
growers and farmers and see what
amount of produce the irrowcrs are
willing to contract to raise. Mr. Paul
hamus has insisted that they shall
make a specialty of raising three kinds
of berries and one vegetable, namely:
the Wilson strawberry, the Munger
Black Respberry, and the Phenomenal
berry, and the Refugee bean. While

Dr. Earl Fortmiller, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Win. Fortmiller, of this city, has
been honored by an appointment as
Interne at St Vincent's Hospital in
Portland. .He moves into the hospital
today and immediately asumes his new
duties.
The appointment is regarded as a
distinct honor and an acknowledgment
of Dr. Fortmiller' abilities. The ap
pointment usually goes to a senior in
the Medical College, while Dr. Fort
miller I but a Junior. He has made a

the directors of the Associated Char
ities, was held last evening at the Ho
tel Albany, and was attended by every

Several acres of land have been
placed at the disposal of the Joint com
mittee and several citisens have indl
rated their willingness to co-operate
with the joint committee by advaacing
funds with which to purchase seed and
to hire teams to plow and prepare the
land for seeding. The committee is
very anxious to get in touch with the
owners of vacant lots that may be used
for garden or for growing potatoes
and beans and the committee is
equally anxious to get in communica
tion with those who desire to avail
themselves of the opportunity to use
such land aa is placed at the disposal
of the joint committee. All available
lota and all applications for the ua of
lota should be listed with Dan John
ston at his office in the First National
Bank Building.
Prof. Boetticher is co-operating
with the joint eommitto and if th
committee la successful In ebtajlnsag
sufficient desirable land a . portion
thereof will be set aside far the ss of
those schollars whose parent will un
dertake to see that the land Is aasded
and well cultivated.
