MOB TWO ALBANY DAILY DEMOCRAT. TUESDAY. MARCH 11 IM7 "X Daily Democrat Wm. H HORN1UROOK Publiirtr Entered at the postoificc at Albany Ortjon. a. sccond-clais matter TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 1917 WOMEN -SUFFRAGE GAINS The spectacular met ods employed by the proponents of women-suffrage, both iu this country and abroad, may perhaps have gained a temporary ad vantage but in the end proved a decid ed injury to the cause which it was expected to help. All of the Pacific coast states to gether with Idaho, Montana, Wyom ing. Utah, Arizona and Kansas were won by an appeal to the rea&ou of the male voters. There was no soap box oratory, no pickets stationed at the doors of the executive mansion, no "hunger strikes", and as far as we have been able to ascertain, no ar rests for petty violations of the laws of the state or nation, A dignified campaign was conducted and it was conducted along lines which might properly be expected to appeal to the thinking members of the male sex. It is in er judgment unfortunate for the cause and we would not vote to deny the women the ballot that so many of the suffrage leaders in the t stern states have not followed the example set by the women of Oregon and her sister states west of the Rocky mountains. They have pre ferer to imitate some of their wild eyed English cousins, and in so do ing are doing the movement which they serve, a grave and irreparable in jury. i here are now fifteen womcn-sui-frage states, casting one hundred and Unity five, out oi five hundred and thirty-one electoral votes. These states have a population of twenty iue million people, the great majori ty of whom were converted to the suffrage movement by a direct appeal to the intellect. British surname leaders have tried the mclo-dramu method of appealing to the voting population and failed. Why should .r American women imitate them: IISFITS By F. P. Nutting The peaple of the Will Val. must pull together. Don't worry: The Japs have their hands full at home, and arc our fri ends. Germany's scheme to give away the Western slice of the U. S. simply carries out the charge of rampant militarism in Germany, ambitious for the conquest of the world. It doesn't take much figuring these days to gues who was to blame for the war. There is hopes for this old world after all. A Kansas City bank teller stole $25,000 of the bank's money, was smitten by his conscience, revealed its location and committed suicide. Hardly know whether to do much gardening or not yet. A Medford man received the follow ing letter given verbatim, which tells of Eaten Oregon prospects in a convincing manner: "mi dere sur youer freind handede me youer letter and i will sayc that it wil b imposibel for ennyone to sell youer lot in madres and rcdmon,, but that if you will hold youer lots in bent! for one mooer yerc they wil bring you sum munny, at less hat is my very kanded opinion youer lots were clcrc oute in the countreel yr. ago ami naw they arc building very clost to tiiem and in 12 munce mooer they wil be bilding rite nop aganst them, if things goo forward as we have every reson to wil. kepe wouer lotts for one yere and rite mee and sc what i can doo for you sincerly you res Under New Management ON SATURDAY.
