It looks v if war 's inevitable with Mexico. If it comes it cannot be a very long affair, for Mexico is in no condition to fight a country like the United States, and is bound to be beaten in whatever engagement oc curs bigger than a bushwhacking af fair. The U. S. has been very patient, as it should be, but the end of such waiting has come, and the time is here for energetic action, the settlement of the present awful internal trouble of the Country. A writer says: The machiuery is crumbling and only an unexpected, right-about-face in Carranza's method can prevent the government's complete disintegration, this official ; declared, even long enough for it to be replaced by a gov ernment sufficiently strong to pre vent near anarchy in the southern re public. Such a situation has been prophe sied for months by some war and state department officials. Because the ad ministration, as repeatedly announced, publicly has insisted on giving the Carranza government every chance to restore Mexico to a real status among nations, such official phophets have been given scant hearing. In some instances administration offi cials have declared such prophesies have been unconfirmed by official re ports, saying unsettled conditions ex. ist only in isolated cases. But today no official could be found who did not admit, privately at least, that "watel! ful waiting" has run its course. Officials themselves pointed to the note sent Ccrranza as evidence thai President Wilson and Secretary Lan sing arc finally convinced that some other than Carranza and some other government than the present defacto structure is needed to bring Mexicc out of her ten year period of revolu tion, rebellion and internecine strife War department officials declared that, in the event of real trouble, they expect no more than two or possibly three real engagements. But there would Still be left the more serious work of policing and pacifying the country south of tiie Rio Grande. It would not be a matter, they say. of taking two or three strategic posi tions by force of arms, and then re treating with the established govern ment for peace, but they are convinc ed that one or two decisive victories for American arms would break any remaining hold Carranza has .on the Mexican government FUTURE OF MOVIES. i A prominent author of movies says; The first development, which is al ready in progress, will be toward longer reels or, rather, longer produc tions. Instead of having half a dozen different plots shown in one evening, --.,or even two or three, the entire even ing will be devoted to one produc tion. "Such plays can be produced much - beter than shorter ones. In other words, the movie theatres are bound more and more to take the place of ' the regular theatres, with one evening 'devoted exclusivly to one c?st and one play. . "These longer plays will inevitably lead to long runs. For instance, in stead of the movie houses in New York thinking that they must have a change once or twice a week they will be content to run the same pro duction for several months or an en tire season. After a piay runs in the leading theatres of five or six big cit ies the production will be shown in other cities. Gradually it will appear in smaller and smaller places. "This gives a long life to the play, a life of at least five to ten years. This has its commercial as well as its 'sentimental value. Although the price to the theatre for the use of the reels will decrease as the size of the city decreases, yet the number of cities in which the production will be shown will rapidly increase as their size diminishes. MISFITS The government of Carranza is tot tcring. The ignoramus has bitten off more than he can digest. A greaser Is a greaser, born and bred. Back of it all is the oily hand of the big interests in Mexico, who have been laboring strenuously for inter vention for a long time. Another man with whiskers is-go-ing to. be downed. His name is C-a-r-r-a-n-z-al Some Rep. Repartee. Corvallis G.T.: We rather like the man Moses not the one who led the children of Israel, but the one who leads the unregeneratc and untcrri- fied Democracy of Benton county. He is such a cheerful cuss, the kind who will smile and look pleasant at his own funeral. Vic is postmaster here and came into this sanctum yesterday and facetiously asked, "who is this man 'Hu-ges' that you have placarded in your window here?" We were try ing to Keep it Dark, Vic, but if you must know, Hughes is the man who will appoint your successor some time after next March. We like straws, particular business straws. One store reports that busi ness this year, every month, has been well ahead of that of the correspond ing month of last year. What's the difference between a live beat and a dead beat? Around Albany are some of the prettiest drives in the world, with magnificent scenery in the offering. Don't let distance always be lend ing enchantment to the view. Look about you right here. "Make Hearst tell what he knows," is a head in the S. F. Bulletin. If he were to do so, there would be some bugeyes in the country. A great many people are confident there are some Americans who know O'roR cpiKzV'a DON'T BLAME THE COW For switching her tail around your neck, stamping on yonr foot, or knocking the -bucket over the pail when you are trying to milk dur ing fly-pest season.
