This week has seen the United States on the verge of war with Ger many, or at least on the verge of a break. Mr. Jingo did his best to nuke the riffle; but it wouldn't erupt, not thus far. Instead, when the cabinet got down to sober investigation the members found that a good many of the reports were lop-sided, not at all as had been reported. By this time the .clear minded person should have learned to discriminate as to the value of war news. It is not well to believe many things until they are verified. The present status is about this: War correspondents have to ears their money, some way, so not being able to always get the real dope they pad the news until it looks like a dragon. It is to be hoped this government continues to keep this country off the thoals of war. . Our border trouble is assuming a more definite shape. We have been looking upon Villa as such a slippery monster that it would be impossible for any one to get him dead or alive; but this Saturday evening it looks more and more as if the bandit is about in the grasp of our soldiers. Col. Dodd is proving a "dod-gasted" good bandit hunter. 1 If the country gets out of the trou ble with only this chase after Villa as the result it will be a pleasing con summation of the experience, after all the miserable jingo efforts in the interest of the coal oil and land own ers to involve the U. S. in an inter vention campaign. . This week a prominent Bible stu dent of New York has given a series of Jectures, in which the present dis astrous and troublesome times have been explained in connection with the prophesies of the Bible, whom all rec ognize as the greatest of all books, and Christians as divine. Dealing with Revelations he has skown the bear ings upon the world in connection with the coming of Christ again in judgment, which he declares, accord ing to the signs of the times cannot be far off. , People generally like college pep. and so this week when two of the classes had a rope pull from both sides of a canal with three or four feet of water in it there were general ex pressions of appreciation from a large crowd that saw the fun. Some people may look upon such things as fool ishness, but they are part of college life where there is spirit, and, mixed up with the seriousness of life such things have to play he'r Part as a diversion. Perhaps just fighting without any press reporters. The ocoiilc of the U. S. will view with circumspection the wiping off of that smile on Villa's face. One would think to read some of the papers that all the Mexicans were ialsc-hearted, unreliable; but there arc good Mexicans the same as good Americans, and sonic of them can be trusted just as far. Recently down in Texas a $150 Plymouth Rock rooster, upon being awarded firtt prize dropped dead. Even roosters can't always stand prosperity. We have tried several words to in dicate the slipperiness of Villa: but none of them quite fit the case, ac- ordng to the latest reports. Again Spring has arriv. The buds are cracking as they burst tV.rth. The flowers are shouting as they Moom gloriously. The brooks are rippling sweetly. And new onions and pea vines are baking their hi-ads in the Spring zephyr. Please don't tell any one who wrote he above.
