The bride is a sister ol Mrs Shacklett, of Eugene, at whose home the ceremony was perform 2d. Good for the Irish. It has been dis covered that Irslimen are never anarch ists. One reason given is that they are all policemen and politicians. After occupying twenty-three pages of the Congressional Record, much of it in nonpariel type, with a eilver speech on Monday, the llth Senator Stewart said, "Mr President, there are several branches of this subject that Isiiall treat hereafter but I will close the i-peech." Several towns are thinking Eugene boastful on account of an item published first by the Oregonian, that more people had gone from here to the World's fair than from anv other city in the state be sides Portland. The truth is, the city which eentts the least number should be best entitled to boast, for keeping its money and people at home during the times when ail wealth that is carried away is felt by the community from which it is drawn. Eugene Register. That is a sensible remark Nevertheless Albany is undoubtedly in the lead in this respect. Think of 500 people start ing from Albany for the World's fair, not many of ihein Albany textile; but simply those making this tlieir starting point, nearly lf.100,000 taken out of the country in a dull summer. The following comprehensive request From a Nebraska gentleman, enys The Dalles Chronicle, was received by the land oihee today : "United StattB Land Office "Will you kindly send me a list of lands (government) timber, mineral and agricultural, also price per acre, and oblige." As there are about 800 toa'n- Bhips, comprising iu.uoo square miles, and nearly 7,000,000 acres of land in this district, and aB each towiiBhip map would cost about $4, the magnitude of the re quest is plainly apparent, and as the let ter did not enclose a check for $1,000, the spirit of the letter could not be com plied with, which Mr Lewis very much regrets. This is also a Bample of some requests sent to newspapers. On a 1'onHervuMve Uiisls. New York, September ISih.ISOT. Once more the gallant yacl.tuien hold sw ay in the beautiful harbor which leads to America's great metropolis. Several years have elapsed since Ihe English sportsmen have mustered courage enough 10 Bend over a boat to try for the cup held by America. Since the Valkyrie left England, to try for the cup, which the Americans w ill defend, local yachtsmen have been preparing for the trial races. Last Saturday the first race was run over the triangular course, in the lower bay. The contestants were the Colonia.Jubilee and Pilgrim, of the Boston Yacht Club, and the Vigilant, ot theNew York Yacht Club. The Vigilant won Saturday as well aB on Monday. The gallant craft cleanly outsailed her Boston antagonists, and was chosen as the defender of the trophy won bv the Mayflower, Volunteer and Puritan. " This is the first time that the defender of the honor of American yachtsmen hails from New York. All the previous yachts have come from Bos ton. and it is natural that the memberp and friends of the New York Yacht club are jubilant. The two races called into commission all the excursion boats on the river, nil of w hich presented a gay appearance as they passed out the nar rows, crowded with passengers and gay with bunting. The first race was run in a calm sea and light wind and the Vigi lant defeated her rivals, the Jubilee be ing second. On Monday the Jay was bright, but the Bea rough and the wind strong. These two races being run un der different conditions, as to weather and wind, and the gallant white winged Vigilant winning uotn, uemonsirateu that she was superior to her nearest rival The selection of the Vigilant to defendJ the cup against the British aspirant, ine Valkyrie, wascommenuea, ana tne com mittee having the race in charge believes that the Valkyrie will return to "Old England" defeated by the Yankee middy. Tdvins? in retirement, and almost for- zotten bv the ontstde world, did grim death Bnd Hamilton Fish, the formar statesman and public celebrity. At hie home on the iiudBon.near Harrisons, iasi Friday expired Hamilton Fish, Secretary of State during President Grant's two administrations. During the period of Mr Fish's public career he was a prom inent personage in politics. He wrb Governor of New York, Senator from New York.and finally Secretary of State, His services in the state department were fruitful and his management of the nego tiation wlrch brought about the Geneva Arbitration was keen ana enrewa, nnu it was due to his labors.together with Wil-j Ham M Evan's pleadings.wbich resulted I in the commission awarding the United States 815,000,000 for damages done to American vessels, by British warships during the Civil war. Altbo having re tired from public life so manyyearB since, the deatn ot Hamilton rum, wno lived to the ripe old age of 85, is the Iobb of one of America's statesmen and a loyal and able citizens of the Empire state of New York. The horses owned by Mr Lomlard, which comprised the Ranco- ca's stable, were Bold at'fattersalls & Cos last Mitur.iay night. The prices realized for some good colts were surprisingly low. But when the great Lamplighter was sold, uniler the hammer, to Mr G Walbaum for 20,000, every turfman and racegoer was literally amazed to see bo promising a horse, young in years, stout of heart, with good mind and a f peed that has won many a al'ant struggle for the honor and treasury of Rancoca'e, sold at such a low price. Mr Walbaum, the public idol's new owner, entered him at Stieepehead Bavon Monday, two days after lie bought him, and tiie gallant Lamplighter won from a Held including such horses ns Banquet, Sir Walter.Teni fier. Candelnlra and illume. The feature of the race was the fact that the grandson of Spendthrift carried 127 pounds, conced ing ten pounds to M F Dwyer's speedy colt Banquet. Itwasevident.diiringthe race, that it required all the strength Taral could command to keep Lamp lighter from running away from his field. It was a remarkable performance, and a great cheer arose from the crowd as the great colt merely galloped under the wire a winner with plenty to spare, and Taral holding him in at that. Perhaps the change from "Willie" Sims to the de termined "Fred" laral in the saddle proved beneficial to Ihe great colt.
