Siiciiker Crisp's visit to Now York for the purpose of conferring with president elect Cleveland, which was first uuthori- tively announced in this eorreipondcnc, was a success from every point of view, and while the speaker will not, ol course, talk about what Mr Cleveland said to hiui, his face indicates to a certainity his satisfac tion, and indeed, ho does not hesitate to say that the conferences were entirely satis factory to bo'h Darticinants, and that he found himself in perfect accord with Mr Cleveland's ideas about what should be done by tho party in congress. The im portance to the democratic party at large of this complete understanding between Spo.iker Crisp and Mr Cleveland can hardly bo overestimated. In tho first place, it removes nil danger of a 'bitter fight over the speakership of the next house and consequently means that perfect har mony will exist between those who will control the legislation of the bouse and the democratic president, nnd that means everything for the future success of the party. Your correspondent regrets that he cannot give as good news of the prospects in tho next scnato. In tho first place, the control of the senate of the next congress is still very much in doubt, with the proba bilities of its being in tho hands of the populists, who have, through S Senator Feffor, announced their intentions to put their votes whero the; will do the most good to themselves. The senator himself Inn long ago given up the attempt to put a stop to silly stories by dignifying them with a denial but a gentleman who enjoys confidential relations with him, nnd who is probably as well acquainted with his intentions as ony one, except himself, said to me: "Senator Hill is first of all a democrat, and you will mako no mistake by nsserting in the most positive terms that he will do nothing in the senate that will bo incon sistent with Simon pure democracy. He will snpport Mr Cleveland's administration as loyally as any man in the senato, except in the matter of appointing mugwumps or newly converted democrats, of tho Wayno JIacVeigh stripe, to office. If Mr Cleve land nominates any of theso men to important i offices I predict that Senator It'll will endeavor to prevent their con firmation by the senate, but he will cast no vote against the confirmation of any man whoso democracy is unquestioned, lto mcmber this prediction, nnd see if time ihws not prove its truthfulness." During that congress without any recom mendation or request from tho war depart ment a bill was lobbied through by the claim agents ring which ut that time collected nbout liino tenths of the commu tation nior.ey upon a big poncnlago of course reducing the period to three years (sin?c then a rule of tho department shuts the claim agents out of this money). It was also discovered that the original law was more than liberal, as an artifi -ial arm will under ordinary usiigii last a life time nnd that a leg lasts from six to eight years; also that 98 per cent of thoso entitled to artificial arms Slid 78 per cent of those entitled to legs regularly tuko the money instead of the limb. Further investigation showed 1ti:it if this claim agent's law had nt been enacted the item would have been $75,000 instead of W50,000. Ijuite n difference, eh?
