If the history of presidential candidatures, and of presi dential nominating conventions form a basis for estimating the result of the scheming that is at the present time re ported as in operation.it is safe to conclude that the men whose names are most prom inent, underestimate the force of public opinion. In the republican nominee we take little interest. Doth Blaine and Har rison have weak and strong points which are for their party to choose between. If the democratic patty make no vital mis takes, it will get the control of govern ment affairs, "The present Indication seem tj us to be that no serious mistakes will be made. The best men, such as Carlisle, Breckinridge, Vilas, Russell, Boles and Others, too numerous to mention, under stand that the new recruits for tatlff reform are not to be led by a scheme that has for its only object the federal olTircc, and that the massei of the democracy demand good government at the hands of those to whom they are to give their confidence. The democratic party has one tried man in whom the public have confidence; one who has had four years of valuable exper ience; one who will come Into the office stronger and better fitted to toke the helm than when he was first elected; one who knows better than be then knew the public mtn In whom to confide for advice. To those who are seeking the payment of bounties by the government; to those who propose to pension everybody, their wives and their children ; to those who de sire the affairs of government admlstered only on n policy of extravagant expendi ture and consequently excessive taxation, on a system of partial reciprocity such as is represented by McKinleyism ; to those and to all such he is diametrically opposed. Betides all this, the man of whom we speak is committed to a tariiT policy of re duced taxation, one that commends itelf to the vast body of the consumers and producers of commodities throughout the land. There is no safety in adopting anv other parly issue and no safety in select ing any other name than the one here ad verted to to head the ticket. One and onlv one man Is called for by the great body of the people, by the great majority, as we believe, who nre hoping and longing for a change of administration, and that man is Grover Cleveland.
