Davis & Kinist-y have just completed for I.lnn county nnd placed In Hie hands of Sheriff Scolt an ownership book, which contains all the untaxed real property In the coun ty It will uc a surprise to many to learn that in it are about a thousand pieces of property not on the regular .issuiMnrnt roll, the gross assessed value of which will approximate $4 VMo. The Sheriff will assess the property as provided by law and collect the taxes the same as those under the regular assessment . Davis & Kiiusey did a splendid job for the count v, one that will be of lasting benefit, and will save the county thousands of dollars in taxes, a yearly amount that can be easily figured out. This experience is the ex perience of all counties securing owner ship hooks, containing evety piece of land in the county, in this case described so a deed can he made from it, and shows what an immense amount of property has been tsoaping Its share of supporting the different governments. Astoria's I K. Though a chestnut, we are all interested in Astoria's railroad. If there is a cltv In Oregon deserving a road, it is that city by th-j sea, where ships should unload instead of up the river loo miles- The San Francisco Chronicle says: 'James S Urqulurt, of Astoria, is in the citv awaiting the arrival of New York capitalists A'ho are concerned In the project of hjilding a railroad from Astoria and Portland. The city of Astoria as an inducement, h.'.s agreed to give loor, acres of laud within the corporate limits for the election of a depot, car shops anil other necessary buildings. 1. . L IJwyer, of New York, heads the syndicate, which will have until 1'ebruary lt to de-.'ide whether the matter will be taken in hands or not. Should they refuse, Mr L'rqu hart says others are rcadv to invest capital in the project. Mr Unjuhart thinks '.hat Astoria, which is the oldest city on the coat settled bv Amerioans, would have hail a railroad before this were it not for the jealousy of Portland. Hut every thi.ig he says, looks favorable now for a railroad gctlii.' there at last. " CiRcirr Court. The following new cases have been begun: Assignment of Cyrus & l'itchford. As few of our citizens have had the privilege of witnessing tile peculiar anil Interesting work of mind reading, as performed bv the few people in the world possessed of this strange faculty, it will doubtless be gratifying news that the distinguished mind reader, Carl King, will visit Albany next Monday and Tuesday nights. He br'ngs m ith him a company of musical artists also, the Spanish Troubadours, headed by Don lose Ramirez, who claims to be the champion mandolinist of the wor.d. ire combination of mind reading and music is said to furnisli an entertain ment that is unusually pleasing and Inter esting. Mr King is said to perform some wonderful tets, such as telling the date on a coin with )ut seeing it ; finding a pin hiiitlen In an Gbscme place and placing It in a pinhole from which it had been taken ; reproducing a living tableau, and many others which simply astonish all w ho w uns- them . the musical selec tions given by the Troubadours on the mandolin and guitar is said tr. be of sur passing sweetness and to call forth uudis uiud admiration. t i in: Baptist Ciicrch. Gradually our farmers are realizing that small farms well managed will pay the best. A live young German, after renting several years, has bought eighty acres near Albany, and is going at his own soil now in the right manner. Diver sified farming Is the order, and prunes and other fruits are already growing, besides oats and wheat. One man can run eighty acres alone and make money. Thrift anil industry will count in this valley every time, but it is no place for a lazy man. "Small farms and no mortgages" is a splendid motto. Linn is destined to become a manufac turing county. No section of Oregon is better adapted to manufacturing. The whole county is pushing forward in this respect. Albany and Brownsville have their woolen mills, Lebanon its paper mill, Waterloo is preparing for her knit ting mill with one of the fined water powers in the U S, Sclo will have her Hour mill, Crafordsville Is getting ready for her boot and shoe factory and already has an ax factory. 'Ihesc, besides many other institutions. Harrisburg will have her water ditch, and already has a good saw mill and Hour mill, and gradually every tow n in the county will have an important manufacturing Industry. Why should the people of Albany be taxed to pay for maintaining an electric light at the crossing of Montgomery and sixth streets when it so frequently hap pens that darkness prevails there. The last two nighU there has been no light, and it Is not an uncommon thing for there to be none there. l,e the citv authorities compel the Electric Light Co. to comply wi'.h its contract. Indignant.
