.,i"ri i ii in i"""" -, MM 1 v.! It it said that Joseph Pulitzer, propriet r the New York WorlJ, it making arrange aa.-nts to stait a similar paper in Chicago. It ii to be hoped that thii is true. Chicago ll aadly in need of such a paper. (jenetal Lbenezer Sprague, one o( the most illustrious of Midugaa Free Masons, ditd recently in the Maonic home at Grand Rip id, lie was 87 years old. General Sprague has been grand hi;h prieti of the grand chap terof Royal V r.u and illustiioui grand master of .he gram) council of Royal and Select Masons. With a strong candidate Gov. Russell thinks the Democrats can carry a majority of the New England states. And there is noth ing rainbowish about Kuss'll, lie is an a'lle. hard-headed, conservative statesman of ex cellent judgment. The death agony has never been known to be as great as in the case of Tom Piatt Fascett A Co of New York. Their death knell lias been sounded In the complete VDrerthrowof these gentlemen In everv. de. Tiartment of the state government. The retribution is a peculiarly lighteous one in view of the fact that these leaders with their coadjutors have, for many years, been stifling the voice of the peopl there in open, notorlous.palpable violation of the constitution. Honest men will simply mock when fear Cometh upon them. The supreme court of the U S has fin ally decided the Boyd Thayer governor ship contest at last. It Is one of the many cases which show how republicans have cheated the people out of their choice for officials. At the November election In iSoo.ln Nebraska, tnere were three candi dates for governor. Boyd, democrat, was elected over the republican and farmers alliance candidates. A question was raised as to the eligibility of Boyd, and Thayer, the then republican governor claimed that he could hold over. The supreme court of Nebraska rendered a purely parllsan decision in favor of Thayer, but the su preme court of the U S to which Boyd arpealed his case ha6 decided in his favor. Now, at this day comes A G Dunn, vVashington coriespondent of the Orego niait, and vouchsafes the statement to the readers of that paper that the republicans of the senate have concluded to permit Senator David B Hill to take his seat in the I'nited States Senate. What remark able condescension on the part of these re publican senators to permit Senator Hill to take Ills seat. True, there is no one con testing the right to his seat, and no reason that bears the semblance of sufficiency has been given that lie should not be per mitted to do so. But it is a question whether f , it would be best to keep him out i y su perior force and numbers. After nmina- ingover this matter, these republican sen ators, according to Dunn, have sagely ar rived at the conclusion that keeping David out would he like running against a buzz saw in lightning-speed motion. These senators have not been unmindful of the experience cf Plait, IIiscocl, Belden and other republican leaders in New York "who, from time to time, during the last seven years, have ran amuck of David In action. It wont do. David has never lost a trick. Verily, he is a continuing right boer. Ji:m:i:soNUN lKMO;ltACY, Hamilton .Inn 2. llVJ. Now suppose we examine our Jeffersonian Jem' ocracy nnJ see if the ex-president i a rep resentative of the democracy of our fathers, or has the war ehungpil the democracy the I nited States that the great principles of the grand old people s party to reduc tion of the tariff. Mills proposed a reduc tion of 4 per cent or eXv.000.00rt. every republican voted against the reduction right away, rhe Mckinley bill was introduce and it proposed a reduction of about $70 000.000 and every democrat voted again the McKinley bill. It put more articles c the free list than did the Mills bill hut still the democrats voted against every' clause and section of the bill. So it lias lieen for over 100 years , thut we have been taxed with protection of infant industries. ' But how was it Vfore the war. The south were free traders, the west was in favor of protection sufficient to run the government the north and east with inciJental protec tion. Now I am in favor of something tangible, (jive us something that will relieve tin wants of our people. Let us remove the omoines ami trusts and extricate our people from the plutocrat's griusp, let us tand by democracy, equal and exact justice to all, special privileges to none, 'opposition to national banks, free and unlimited coin ge of gold and silver. Strike for the right and stay with it. Politicians mav sink it for the present but it will rise ng-.iin. Truth will prevail. Jacob Newman a jiisloxceitios In another column we publish a commun ication from nil old and esteemed friend, Jacob Newman, calling us to account for saying that under certain circumstances the Dkmik-iiat would rejoice in the defeat of the democratic party. This is what we said: "liut the ilii:MiH itT would expect ar.'i iinj,,. ..r t!ie ileie:it "f 'Me party if ;t should now dc "it i;s t;ir;lt views." The Ikm oi iiAT said untiling; at all about "other legislation that the'rieople are largely call ing for." nor 11 single word about hoping for the defeat of the party in case it did not make the tariff the sole issue in the next campaign. The Dkmopiiat has not hereto fore, and does not now, insist that the tariff should be made the sole issne. Hut it does believe that it is now, and should be continued the paramount issue in the coni ng campaign, for the niisnn that all the trusts in the land of which the people so loudly and justly complain have their seat of iower in the tariff scheme of the country. Hro Newman must have seen the rewrts sent out all over the country to the effect that the election of Crisp for speaker was a protection victory and that he and those whom he placed in the lead would either change the attitude of the party by making it a protection party or by adopting a do nothing p'llicy in reference to the tariff. It was ii'.'.tin-t this course that the Kkwucuat protested and caused us to say that in such , ca-e the parly might to lie defeated. The last is the recent heavy reduction in wages 'among the employes of the American Hosiery Com pany at New Britain, Conn. This is one of lie most highly protected industries in the hole ta-iff lift. Under the tariff of 1SS3 there as a uniform duty of 40 per cent on cotton hosiery. T.re McKinley bill divide into two classes and added specific duties to the ad valorem, so that the equivalent rate ranges from 53 to 65 per cent; and now, just as ! ore fancyirg ourselves happy, comes this cut in wages.
