This law does not lmply.how- ever, that particular kind of booths shall be prepared, such as the elaborate steel affairs built in the East and shipped out J here at great expense, which have already been adopted by several counties. Plain wooden booths, constructed by the local carpenter, will answer every purpose and some use can be made of the lumber after the election Is over. Mrs Francis Hx'gtn Burnttt' Rev Sam Small was arrested in Boston tie 19th inst on a charge of obtaining $1000 by I alse pretenses, made by Rev U N Monroe, an Episcopalian clergyman, at Newton Lower Falls. Mr Small has been slumping this state for the past few weeks in the interest of the prohibition ticket. Secretary Merden, of I the prohibitory state committee, went bail for him and he has been stumping the state ever since. The case was brought in the civil court to avoij the scandal that a criminal case mi 'lit bring to the cause of prohibition . It is said that the transaction, which resulted the arrest of Mr Small, was nrtcd upon in Auuisl, 1891, when Mr Small was preMilent oftheOden university. It is alleged that Mr Small :n;1uced the Rev Monroe to pay $1000 for a lot of lnn.l which he declared was worth that sum. The land belonged to the university, and it i alleged that the univer- I sity demanded only $500 for ir and that Mr Small made $500 by this transaction. When Mr Monroe heard of this he demanded the return of his money. The administration organ has a report from Washington that the government has conducted a convention with Germany nnder which American grains and pro visions will be admitted Into that country either free or at greatly reduced duties after the ist of January next. The consideration for this concession Is said to be an assurance that the president will not reiinpose a duty on German beet sugar, as he is empowered to do by the McKlnley act. If this arrangement shall be made the people of Oirmany will be able to get their food supplies from this country cheaper than they now do, by the full amount of ihe duty.
