The rite in the price of -corn in Germany, it U alleged, it partly due to wholesale buying of thii cereal by the Kus sian authorities. By means of a powerful jet of compressed air a German military engineer drives dry ce ment down into the sand or mud at the bottom of a stream, to that the water immediately fixes the cement, and it becomes like solid rock, suitable for foundations. A grape vine in Santa Barbara, Cal. which was planted by a Mexican woman aeventy-two years ago, hat a diameter of twelve Inches a little above the ground. Its branches cover 11,000 square feet, and it produces each year from 10,000 t 13,000 pounds of grapes. Ten species of North American birds are put down by the ornithologists as "Hiss ing." Of these, two the great auk and Labrador duck are believed to have be come extinct within the memory of living men. Perhaps representatives of the other eight will yet be found. Meat of them are very diminutive. Cold is coined freely now, so that the term free coinage relatet wholl; to silver Free coinage of silver means the coinage at the government's mints cf all the silver bullion which the owner may bring them, upon hit paying the regular fixed mint charges. At present no holder of silver bullion can get It coined for his own ac count; he must sell It to the government which coins It and pockets the difference,' ii any, between the bullion value and the coin value. It is not so much a question whet'.er Hill shall plant or Cleveland shall water, at it is that democracy should hive an in crease. After all the candidate only stands before the country as a representa tive of a principle, and as long as the can didate is clean and able, It makes but little difference to the masses about the name. The mala job in the next election is to kill KcKinleyl6m,and to free the country from the oppression of the tariff barons, Telegram. The "mailed hand" of Boss Quay it aeen in the resolution passed by the re publican state convention of Pennsylvania endorsing BUine for the presidency. The nomination of Gregg for state auditor shows the "bolters" in that state arc get ting in the lead. Gregg voted for Han cock for president and Pattison for gov ernor last fali. Quay has evidently com promised with the bolters In that state by giving them the local offices In return for support for Blaine tor president. If Blaine is elected president Quay will con trol federal appoints in that sta'e. Quay may not te wise but he ts shrewd. In 1870 the population of Massachusetts 1.457,35"! 88o, 1,783,085; 1890, a,38, 943; thus placing Massachusetts sixth in the lists of States in 1 890, where she stood seventh in 1890. The increase Irom 1880 to 1885 was 8.9; from 1885 to 1890 was 15 3. It is related as a curious fact that Paris, with a population of nearly 2,5o,ooo souls, has less than 100 negroes within its limits. Statisticians say that the whole of Fraace cannot muster a negro population exceeding 500. . The Topeka Journal says thst over 10,000 self binders have been sold to Kansas farmers since June I , and claims that the hay crop if all cut and marketed would pay the en'ire in debtedness of the State. A dispatch from St Louis says: "The exectutive committee appointed by the Fort Worth Farmers Alliance convention has Issued a circular to thc"membera of the Farmers1 Alliance and Industrial Union, and to farmers and laborers of the Un ited Statef," calling a convention In St. Louis on Sep tctr.be 15th, next. The convention is called in accordance with a resolution p.oocd argthe Fort Worth meeting In opposition to the sub-treasury plan. This effort on the part of conserva tive members ano real farmers, Is in order to emancipate the Farmers Alliance from the control of scheming politicians. The basis of representation is fixed at three delegates for every county in the jurisdiction of the national alliance. The call concludes with the following: This meeting is a protest on the part of lovers of the constitution of the Alliance a gainst seeing that organization prostituted by a body of men who have no Interest in farming, and whose love fur the organiza tion Is limitnl by the amount of personal gain they cm get out of It. This 1 an ef fort on the part of conservative members and real farmers of our order to emanci pate the Farmers' Alliance from the con trot of schemir.g politicians and designing demagogues. That we will succeed In i this effort wc can have no doubt. There seems to be a general effort In the south to squelch a tliird party when democrats arc in the majority .and encourage It In the north." CHOICE MEATS 0 Ah.
