1 Slatlit Democrat DEMOCRATS AND TUB ALLIANCE. The question of the right attitude of the democrats In Kansas or anywhere ele towards the farmers' alliance Is one which seems to solve Itself In the presentation, The first duty of democrats everywhere and at all times Is to uphold the principles of American democracy; to stand Ur Indf vldual liberty; for local self-government for the earner's right of property In hi earnings, qualified only by tax Hen on so much of them as Is absolutely necessary for his protection In the maintenance of peace and good order; to resist class rule and clais legislation; to insist on equal justice for all men : to deny the right of any class to demand special favors for Itself; to carry on the eternal struggle of Inherent right against class, corporate or personal privilege. And, that it may be possible to do this, to maintain the party organization founded by Jefferson and upheld from generation to generation bt the Americans chosen to fight for liberty in the vangutrd of the world's progress To do this is at once the duty and the highest privilege of every democrat. It Is for every democrat a sacred trust never to be lost sight of. It is his most burdening responsibility as a free American, and he cannot forget it or evade It without being false to himself, to his country, his poster, it and the hopes of his race. But In considering the fact that many Western farmers are in favor of a class Party to represent the agricultural class exclusively, democrats must not lose sight of causes. The alllahce'canriot maintain itself as a class party in national politics. It Is impossible for it to do so. Its members must eventually take sides with one party or the other, and in considering the immediate present It must never be for gotten that the whole farmers' movement lias had a most wholesome effect on politics In re -enforcing the protests of the democratic party agalntt republican pluto cratic policies. Democrats have no quarrel with the alliance and no fight to make against it, In as far as it is an agricultural educa tional society the can join '.t consistently and retain their membership in it until an attempt Is made to force them to support undemocratic measures. Even then they have no reason In sound politics foi actively opposing It. Recruited as it has Deen so largely lrom the ranks ot the re publican party, it naturally shows much of the republican leaven in demands for such measures of class socialism as federal control of crops. This was to be expected. But, on the other hand, It Is re-enforcing the democratic party in many ways In its struggle against plutocracy, entrenched in the laws, precedents and policies of the re publican party. It is with this republican party, with this plutocracy, with these laws, precedents and policies, that demo crats must struggle. They must hold the party lines and consider as a possible r'crult for democracy eve-y man who for any cause is antagonizing the republican party. The democratic party in the (Vest ne'ds alius wisdom, all its patience and all its courage. It is no time now to make Issues over county ollices. If the alliance can poll votes enough to control them heieafter. as it sometimes did Ust year, let it have them, and then let democrats go on with their wark of fighting down the republican party. Let the alliance fight on Its own lines and let democrats push the democratic lines over the republican works St Louis Republic.
