The Portland Examiner, in speaking of Da$e Th.?mps$n's schemes of dodging his taxes relates the following: All old tcttlers remember the incident. lie resided in Oregon City then, lie had A wallet full of bonds and taxable paper. 1 he time lor the assessors annual visit came around. A great hue and c7 was maJe thatThomp son s home had been burglarized and tl.esc papers had been stolen. 1 he assessor came and poor 1 hompson had no bonds to tax. Not knowing the address cf the "burglar," the assessor took no cognizance 01 these collat erals. He performed his duty and went his way, and, singular and unprecedented as it may ap pear to the readers of this paper, in a few days the "burglar" repented of his sin, and one dark, gloomy evening, after the lObins had ceased to sing and the charming notes of the whipporwill rang out upon the iir, the pos les sor of the stolen treasures slipped up slyly to Thompson's home and tossed the package through an open window, and there was great rejoicing in the house ot David. But the bonds and the notes and the mortg ages escaped taxation that year, thanks to the unconscionable and wicked "burglar. As stated, all old settlers remember this oc currence, and these lines are written simply to direct the attention of later day citizens to one of the most remarkable incidents in the history of the West.
