Of course Iiolse City people are anxious to have the road go to mat city.and will oiler Inducements, which it is hoped will secure such a rciult : vet.a railroad man of experience tells a Demo crat man that It will probably go south of there a good many miles, keeping this side of the Snake river, as the field the other side is already filled by other roads, ana to reacn noise lllv would cause a long diversion north. The fact is.thouirh, he says, the route Is now a very indefinite thing beyond a certain point since the ac tion of the C and N W, even in the minds of the management. Notwithstanding inis view mere are good chances tor Holse City, and its importance as a business cen ter will work in its favor. A Sample. The following from the Welcome is a sample of the way Portland property is assessed: Sam Smith, propri. etor of the Occidental Hotel property, In creased the rental ot his places on Morris, on street, between First and Front nearly $'iou per month, last week. The count assessor is requestad to note ths injustice, if such exists, and act according ly. 11 a poor man be assessed at 50 per cent, of his holdings, is there any reason why others escape at 8 per cent, of theirs? The contrac t for building the bridge across the river at this place, was let to Hodman & Bates, for i,(HHl, at the last term of court. We do not think this amount is sullicieiit to justify any com pany in putting in such a bridge as economy and good judgment would dic tate. No snide bridge will stand here, and to put in one that will be curried away by the first freshet that comes, is not economy. We ure willing to leave the matter to the judgement of our County Commissioners, trusting that they have thoroughly acquainted them selves with the peculiar condition of the river and its bunks at this place.
