After Gas Saturday evening a party
of Portland men, consisting of Hon. M.O.

the natural gas well, which It has been
claimed has been found on their property.

The contrac t for building the bridge
across the river at this place, was let to
Hodman & Bates, for i,(HHl, at the last
term of court. We do not think this
amount is sullicieiit to justify any com
pany in putting in such a bridge as
economy and good judgment would dic
tate. No snide bridge will stand here,
and to put in one that will be curried
away by the first freshet that comes, is
not economy. We ure willing to leave
the matter to the judgement of our
County Commissioners, trusting that
they have thoroughly acquainted them
selves with the peculiar condition of the
river and its bunks at this place.
Brownsville Times.
The price is really low, but it can be
explained. Several foreign bridge com
panies have lieen in the lield trying to
get the business. Holl'inaii & Bates, an
Oregon firm, do not propose to allow this
and are cutting prices to keep tlio busi

erected.
School Statistics. State School Su
perintendent McElroy has received many
of tiie annual reports of the sujieriiiten
dents of the several comities. Morrow
county's census shows 1512 persons in the
county between the ages of four and

dangerous illness of his father, .1. J. Fin-

A Sample. A stranger in the course
of a conversation witli a Pendletonian
to-day, remarked very emphatically that
he was going to leave the state. Oregon
was no good, he said, mid any man w ho
would live in it had either lost his rea
son or never had nnv to lose. Shortly
after the same Pendletonian aaw his
new-found acquaintance crawl into a
box-car. He explained that he Pre
ferred that mode of traveling and was

Not Verv Bad. A report lieing circu
lated that a man had been terribly man
gled by nn accident Saturday evening at
the Grant's Pass S P Co's. factory, a
emocrat man investigated the matter
and found that Mr Ixive, an employe,
bud been slightly bruised by the licit
living off a new machine, aiid the ma
chine fulling on him; the injuries only
laying him up for a short time, though
it was "a close call" for a serious acci
dent. Bio Houses. Considerable interest
was taken in the twelve Knglishshire
horses nt L. Senders' stables. One of
them, a dapple gray, weighed just a ton.
A large dark bay, with a pedigree reach
ing buck almost to William the Conipier
er is valued at t2SO0. All of them arc
solid, attractive looking animals.

cob Frnzier passed through the city en
route to Kugenp, having in charge the
Isxly of his son, Nick L. Frazier, who
met an accidental and lonely death in
the mountains near Pendleton, during
the winter. The wife accompanied the

Rough Customers. Two tramps were
arrested to-day for begging and other
crimes. Among other things, one of
them asked a man for 25 cents and on
being told ho didn't have it for him,
reached out and gave his cheek a vigor

Steamer Arrived. The Steamer Wil
lamette arrived yesterday evening, at the
isay, ana a special train arrived at Albany
to night with passengers and a shipment
of oranges, celery, cauliflower, asparagus,
cauDage, suing Deans, etc., fjr the Wil
lamette Packing Co. Some fresh country
butter on hand.
Fine Stallions The undersigned has
just arrived In the city from Illinois, en
route to Portland, with twelve fine im
ported Shire draft stallions, and will re
main in the city until next Tuesday, or,
perhaps, Monday. All who are interested
in fine breeds of horses should call at the
