A Prohibition Brewer. Washington, Dec, la, It ia intimated that Judge Brewer, recently appointed justice of the supreme court of the United States, will not have an easy time in securing a posi tion on the bench. Strong opposition has been developed to his confirmation on the part of the Iowa liquor men, his opponents baaing . their fight upon the decision of Brewer that Kansas breweries could be confiscated by the state without reimbursing the brewers- It is believed, however, that Brewer will be con firmed eventually. An Eastern Blizzard. St Paul, Dec. 12, The signal service ob server reports a cold wave approaching from the north. It is more than 1000 J miles wide, This evening at 8 o'clock all the territory north ot Montana, Dakota and most of Minnesota had a temperature from 2 to 14 degrees below zero. At Medicine Hat the mercury stood this evening at 16 degrees below zero; at Prince Albert, 14 below; Minnsdosa, 10 below; St Vincent, 6 below. The barometer is very high ' to the northward, a id that is evidence that the wave will be of considerable duration. Realties tirewth. Seattle, Dec, 12. The increase in' the business of the mailcarrier system since its es tablishment in Seattle is one of the best evid ences of the city's marvelous growth. During the entire month of October, 1888, the total number of letters delivered by carriers was 4916. Last Monday the twelve car.iers on Seattle's mail routes, delivered 9378 letters. During the month of November just post, there were 356,335 pieces of mail delivered to resid ents and collected for transmission. This in cluded 149,200 letters, 9173 postal cards, 84,. 01 1 papers and circulars and 1178 registered letters delivered and 88,995 mail letters 5812 local letters, 5566 local postal cards, 5342 mail postal cards and 7068 papers and packages COlie"".
