1 M 1 It : i t G.orge Vanderbllt, who It nkout 10 bull th. tplendld count seat at Aahevll e, N. C, Is the youngest m of the late Wll. Ham H Vanderbllt. He U a bachelor and Is sew about 57,earaold;U tall and .light in figure, and of dark complexion, hair and eyes. He caret nothing for society, and is most happy wheij in his library with his books His legacy from his fata er was $7,000,000 together with a library and many of the pictures in the Vanderhilt gallery. - The Portland Journal, republican says : "If the administration at Washington, and particularly the Oregon delegation, do not with to be relegated to ' innocuous desue tude" to far at Oregon it concerned, they should lay the cold bla.'.e of ths political scalping Vnife on the heads of the demo cratic appo!nte:who now hold the fat offices in Ihe feileiel sc-vici of this slate. No man wat ever more u.-azenly "an ob noxio'is par isan" than Marshal Myers, and the other federal officials are none the less dtscrving of a sptea' ticket of leave. If it is a good and wise thing to elect re publican congreismen and senators, it must be equally the part of wisdom te ap point republicans to ill the important offi. cet. Let the good work begin." Thit it theaatual tpiritol republican civil service reform referred to by the republicans in their national platfoi m . Fust the icholari who left the Republican p u jr were scoffed at then the cergymen who did likewise were lampooned, and now the wealthy men who have got sick of the old machine are the subjects of sarcasm, Well, we guest they can all ttand this longer than the Republican party can, If it it true that Cod elected Harrlton, i Is autie evident that Ho regrets the' part He took in trie campaign. His influeac of la'. seems to have run toward the oth ei party. Mercury. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. WANTED.. The Portland Journal says: "Candi date Foraker'slispatch to governor Semple elect, congratulating" the latter upon his success is another mark of a true republi can, and only tends to show the difference between the selected material it takes to make a republican and the stuff democrats are made of. Who ever heard of a demo crat sending a congratulating dispatch to a successful republican? That would be as contrary to the general make up of the ordinary democrat, as a monkey climbing a tree backwards. Neither are built that way." Now does the Journal really tup pose that Feraker was glad that Camp bell, (not Semple) was elected? If so, why did he use all the power he could summon Including a base resort to forged papers to defeat him. For three months Foraker put forth super-human efforts to defeat Campbell and then after all these efforts have failed and Campbell elected he rushes in to congratulate the latter. No Foraker wat not glad. Hit congrat ulation to Campbell wat the well known eSort of the demagogue to secure a little cheap capital. XTotice. It says: The present administration hat boen in existence tine the 4th day oi March latt, and it is but, the sheerest truth, known of all .men, that It ha not up to thit day done a single thlngsr for the matter of that, said single thing to Indicate that It has any Idea or policy unconnected with the dia tributien of federal offices. It might have adopted a policy in regard to that pudllc duty which would have commended It to the earnest support of the country ; but It chose to adopt one which has day by day brought down upon It the angry comdem nation of the country. The president had apparently no other and higher idea of the duties of his great office when he entered It, or since, than that of dlstrbuting the ex ecutlve patronage. To that single line of duty he has devoted himself with an encr gy and pertinacity unexampled. Never before in the history of the coun try has public office, which should be a public trust, been so persistently used as a political spoil, or as a reward to the pract ical politician, as has been the case since the 4th oi March. The country has no cause to regret the result of Tuesday's election, nor will the republican party have if its able and hon est managers Insist that the administration shall call a halt upon the policy of vulgar, selfish politics which It hat pursued since lit coming Into power. The rebuke of the people on Tuesday wat emphatic; and unlett the administration changet Itt en tire course and shows that It has higher alms than those of putting the offices where they will do most good to one man, the rebuke oi 189J will be a great djal more emphatic.
