When Deputy United States Marshal Neagle killed Terry, the Oregmian seized upon the tragic event with the hope of be ing able to extort tome political capital from It, tut to far, it hat met with a de. servedly ignominious defeat. Not a single republican paper, (and we cheerfully tay it to their credit,) has been found In the state that would for a moment permit Its col umns to be used for the base and degrad ingiy slanderous purposes to which the Oregouian has been from day to day en. Many of these papers have remained si. lent, but the Mountaineer, one of the staunchest and most decent papers in the state, has the manly courage to condemn the brutal warfare which the Oregonian makes upon more than half the people of the Union. The Mountaineer says : 'Da Tid S Terry who has gone to his final ac count for any misdeeds of which he might have been guilty, might have been a repre sentative of southern chivalry nantebellum days ; but no one but a narrow-minded blgot.or w ho has not sufficient breadth and depth of brain to grasp question in all Its details, would ever make the assertion that he was a fair representative of the demo cratic party. The leaders of democracy hare, in some instances, descended from the old Puritan stock of Massachusetts,an i are at cool and calculating a class of Indl yldualt as can be found anywhere. Cleve land, Whitney and Endicott have no hat. Cavalier blood in their veins ; neither did Jackson, Pierce, Buchanan or Douglas. While we acknowledge these facts.it must also be admitted that Henry Clay, the great Whig leader, was of hot, Impetuous south. ernblood,and that John Bell.of Tennessee, the last candidate on what is denominated the Know Nothing ticket, was from the same Cavalier race. The life of Terrv will not be made of any political signifi cance except by men of very small minds, whose mental vision is obscured by preju dice, and whose Ideas of men and life are contracted by extraneous influences sur. rounding them. The Northern democracy was composed of a different class from the southern j and the northern Whig from the southern. And to day the different portions of the United States have become so mixed that it Is difficult to And a distinc tive class In any. Northern Puritan and southern Cavalier have Intermingled, and French Huguenot and Spanish Catholic, and these combined although we must acknowledge the Anglo-Saxon elements to be predominant make the modern American. After dinner his guests made their way to the billiard-room and began to play. Before long Mr Tilden confessed to sleepiness and proposed to go 10 oea. Mr Harlow accompanied hi with the purpose of returning later to his pleasure seeking friends, but when he got up stairs he reached the conclusion that,as his guests knew where to sleep, he would fjllow Mr Barlow's example. He did so, anJ slept soundly until after daylight the fallowing morning. On awakening he heard the rattle of the billiard balls, and oncluded that, as his guests were such early risers, it was quite desirable that their host should get out as soon as possible. He did so, and went to the billiard room.where the game had proceeded without Interrup tion through the whole night. He found at the door, the only exit, his faithful but fierce bull dog standing guard. The guests had made, during the night, one attempt after another to get away and go to bed j but the bull dog had done his duty so sue cessfully as t prevent their departure.and there was nothing else to do through all the long watches of the nlghtbut to return to their cues and billiard table. The latest report from AVashington is that if the committee now investigating the pension bureau shall find that Commissioner Tanner has exceeded his authority, he will cheerfully acquiesce in the finding and be more conserva tive hereafter.
