This part of the country is the nost dry and desolate that the writer ever traveled over, not a 5 ear of gveen grass could be seen along the road as far as the edge could reach, no grain, no garden, and no water, you cannot get a drink for your self or beast after you leave Bear creek until you 'each the Deschute River, a distance of 2S miles, unless you get it out of a barrel where the thermometer registers from 1 10 to 125 and it takes considerable gall to ask a mm to let you water your horse at his barrel that he has hauled perhaps 6 or Smiles I left Bear creek at 5 a m and reached C L Morris is at the upper end of Juniper Flat at 2:30 pm. Alter partaking of some refreshments 1 started ard traveled o miles to cct a drink for my self and h jrse, In this whole country known as Juniper Flat there is not to exceed 3 families. but who nave to haul water from 3 to 12 miles. the people who inhabit this wild waste are sociable, kind and o 'liging but have a far away look like the man tha is watching for his snip to come in. 1 hey seem to have lon'ing expression on their countenances, wined plainly show to the writer that they are not contented, but longing for the good old Williimet e Valley. Thjre is no grain to be nan in 11, an txing burnt out trom the scorch' ing rays of a clear sun, Mr Green Morris cut horn 05 acres ol .spring wheat the enormous amount of 6 ton of hay. Mr CL Morris cut from 45 acres of fall wheat 40 tons of hay and he is the only man on the Flat who had any hay to speak of. Wheat would run from 6 to 10 inches in height. 1 hejwuter passed many a held ot wheat ihut would not measure o inches in hitjhi. Not being altogether stuck on the Juniper Flat i wended my way narlhward, eroding the white river at Tych Valley, after climbing Tygh ridge I reached the rolling country south of the Dalles, which is a very tiry and desolate country. At the town of Alliens seeing a large windmill pump stoppei tn water my horse and self lut when I called lor a glass ol w ater was informed that it was hauled 8 mile and had been standing in barrel over night. 1 was also informed that they made daily trips with a four horse team to supply the store and for family use. After leaving Athens 1 traveled ten miles and reached Dufur on 1 q mile creek, which hns alway furnished a large quantity of water but at tin present time is just barely running. At Dufur I paid? I. CO per bushel for oats and had t plead starvation for my hirse before I coul. get them at that price, at Tygh Valley 2 per lb was charged lor oats, also at the bummit house, -ml hay sold from $20 to $30 per ton by the feed. Now in conclusion let me say to those who contemplate leaving the W tllamette Valley to make their stake in the country that I have just given a brief account of, that they had Itetter leave well enough alone, for there arc more leaving the Eastern Oregon country than yu can imagine nnd Mtt few going there.
