A great inter est has been manifeitcJ here in the acci dent which resulted in the death nt Paisley, Lake count.v, of Mr O Z Morgan, who had many friends in IJnn county, we give the following account of the acci lent from the Lakeview Examinrr : OnJuly3isthc was in the act of re moving a long, strong rope from the neck of a wild and treacherous horse, when the animal became frig'.itened And started lu run, entangling the loose end of the rope around his leg, about the spur, and thrs dragging him at a great speed, several times around a large corral before the ani mal finally stopped, and he was released by his ten year old son. His sufferings were Intense and continuous from that time till released by death. Deceased came from among the older and most highly respected pioneers of Oregon. He was born in Polk county .this State, on the jSth day of August, 1849. His father and mother, Miller Morgan and wife, still live in Linn county, and many other relatives reside in different parts of the Willamette Valley. He leaves a widow and two sons, the eldest about ten years old and the youngest an Infant about three months old. TUKY ItESOI.VEl). A special train bringing the passengers fromthe steamer" WlllametteValley 'arriv ed in Albany at 6:30 o'clock last evening. The steamer crossed the bar at 1 o'clock, after being outside in a dense fog for two days. To a Democrat man who came over on the special train the passengers expressed their admiration for the splendid treatment and fare received on the stcam- The following resolution unanimous ly passed by the passengers was handed us for publication : Whkrkas, We, the passenger of the steamship "Willamette Valley," on her 7jnd vovage from San Francisco to Ya- quina Bay, having been delayed for two days and nights off the Cuas of Oregon by a denso log, hereby desire to publicly express our thanks to the otlicial ot said aeamship for their kind and courteous treatment during this trvlng time, and e pi ess our thanks and gratitude to Capt. The Democrat has had the pleasure of meeting Messrs C E Barrows and E C Searles, two live young men recently from Chicago, who are in the Willamette Valley with a view to locating, with the chances in favor of Albany as the site of their future home. They are business men, and have the cut of the genuine rustler. As Sunset Cox puts it we shouldn't be surprised if the were some of the cream being shipped from the East. They pronounce this a magnificent and unsurpassed Valley. Fireman's Tournament, The North west Firem in s association and tourna ment, by a vote of the directors held at Vancouver yesterday, will be held at Taco ma beginning on September i6lh and last ing three days. It will be the greatest tvent in the history of the association. else the following list of very large prizes is no indication. Albany should send a team equal to that of last year.and there would be no question as to its securing one of the large prizes ; Wet test First prize, $1000 ; second, $300 ; third, $lco. Dry test First prize, $400 ; seconu, $200 ; third, $100. Speed race First prize, 3JO ; seconu, $100 , third, $50. Since the Democrat was published yesterday some active steps have been taken towards securing the public hospital, to be managed by the Sis ters, for Albany. The land for the same has been promised and a deed will be se cured, which will insure the location of the hospital here. Our business men seem generally to appreciate the value of such an Institution for Albany and will do their snare towards getting it. 1 tie matter will come up in a tangible form in a short time. and the Democrat will keep its readers posted about this Important Institution Uncivil and Disobliging. The Yi- quina Refublkian makes a defence for the postmaster of Newport against the criti cisms made against that official for being - uncivct. disobliging and incompetent. Its defence is a mere denial, but the com plaints are so general and uniform that there Is hardly a question of the truth of the charges- The writer has heard of these complaints from all sources and from many whose motive in the matter could not be other than henest and candid. Albany The Detroit free rress whose representative was in the city re cently gives Albany a good writcup. Though not over drawn, It is plainly and fairlv stated, and is such an article as should do the city some service. Here the writers summary on Albany. The steady and rapid growth of this favored ,ection will find a reflex in Albany, which Is and must continue to be its chief com mercial city, and to the impartial observer It would appear that she is bound to ex- nerience In the near luiure an era 01 pros perity and development of which she has not hitherto areamea. 1 kow vi uu u trr l.u-at'on in Orerron or In all the west Inr the investment of capital in any kind of enterprise which wonld find in cheap and abundant power, weaun 01 raw teaial and accessibility of markets. Orgn State Weather Bureau c oper ating with U. S. Signal Service Central of nee, Portland, Or., for the week ending Saturday, August 10th, 1SS9 : The temperature has been lower during the past week than It has been for the five pievious weeks. No rainfall is reported. This makes the seventh week of contin uous dry weather. The sun was almost continually obscured by the smoke from the extensive fo.-cit fires, which are doing so much damage in the Cascade and Coast ranges. The shipment of peaches, pears und plums has increased. Large quantities of fruit are being gathered. Watermelons and cantalopes aie very plentiful. Excel lent reports are received relative to the fruit yield and prospects. The wheat harvest continues and large quantities are being delivered to the ware houses. The market has an upward ten doncy. Little wheat is being sold, but 61 cents per bushel is offered in the Valley and 56 cents in Eastern Oiegon. Oats and barlev are yielding well, but rather light in weight. The reports continue to indi cate that the potato crop will be below the average. Western Oregon, north of the Rogue River, generally reports good yields of wheat, oats and barley as well as fruits, equal to the average. Wheat In Eastern Oregon is yielding better than was expect ed, especially so in the Grande Ronde and Indian Valleyi. The general yield of wheat in Oregon will equal that of former years, True, the hot weather and dry winds had a verv iniurlous effect and these caused the shortaee in the expected yield. The acreage has been largely increased, and it Is by this increased acreage tnat tne aver age crop will be obtained. By the remark in these bulletlnes, tnat sucn a county or such a section would have an average yield the intention is that the amount tor shipment will equal tnat 01 lormer years, though the amount per acie may be less ened. In the counties adjoining Sherman ana Wasco there will not be more than enough wheat for home consump'ion. In other parts of Eastern Oregon yields of from 10 to 40 and some 50 bushels per acre are reported. The general average will be from 20 to 25 bushels per acre. In West ern Oregon, so far as can be gleaned from reports the general average win oe irorn 25 to 30 bushels per acre. 13. o. rAOUU, Observer V 8 Signal Service.
