If a cloth wet with alcohol was used for this purpose, or, what is much cheaper and always at hand, kerosene oil. there would be a perceptible falling off in the manufacture and sale of lamp chimneys. It Is really surprising how seldom chimneys will break,and what a fine polish wMl be given them by cleans ing in kerosene or alcohol. Salt pork sprinkled with red pepper bandaged around the throat is an excellent counter irritant for diphtheritic wire throat. If the flat-iron is dirty tie up a piece of yellow beeswax In a rag,and when the iron is almost bu not quite hot enough to use, rub it quickly with the wax, and then with a coarse cloth. A good way to use small pieces of soap is to place them In a wide-mouthed quart bottle,and when half full add a lea'poonftil of powdered saltpetre and a tablespotnful of ammonia and a quirt of warm wateY. And the coddled infants of that early day, grown into stalwart and hoary monopolies, are exacting a tariff of 47 pur cent, or a I mo it six times as much as was required to'"pro tect'' them a hundred years ago ! If the people of this country arc not satisfied that these robust infants should be put in process of weaning they are the mos. stupid or long suffering tax payers of which the annals of civilized government hold anv record.
