sitting room or parlor. It can be destroyed
by boiling a little vinegar in a cup, which
can be poured over the cabbage before it is
served, if liked, or put in a pinch of soda
or lump of charcoal with the salt.
For burns and scalds nothing is more
soothing than the white of an egg, which
may be poured over the wound. II is soft
er as a varnish for a burn than collodion)
andbeing always at hand can be applied
immediately. It is also more cooling than
the sweet oil and cotton which was former
ly supposed to be the surest application to
allay the smarting pain.
Cuffs laundried at home fail to please
because they are ironed out flat, and when
the buttons arc put in they blister and
wrinkle. This can be avoided if the laun
dress irons the cuff until it U perfectly diy,
then takes the broad end of the tlatiron.and
pressing very hard on the cdge.places it at
one end of the cuff and slowly gees over its
whole length. The cuff will roll a the
iron leaves it. This is so simple an opera
tion that one can succeed the tlrct time It
is tried.
Tea or coffee stains will come out at
once if they are taken immediately and
held over a pail while boiling water is
poured upon them.
Lamp chimneys should never be washed
III soapsuds or clear wat-jr. If a cloth wet
with alcohol was used for this purpose, or,
what is much cheaper and always at hand,
kerosene oil. there would be a perceptible
falling off in the manufacture and sale of
lamp chimneys. It Is really surprising
how seldom chimneys will break,and what
a fine polish wMl be given them by cleans
ing in kerosene or alcohol.
Salt pork sprinkled with red pepper
bandaged around the throat is an excellent
counter irritant for diphtheritic wire
throat.
If the flat-iron is dirty tie up a piece of
yellow beeswax In a rag,and when the iron
is almost bu not quite hot enough to use,
rub it quickly with the wax, and then with
a coarse cloth.
A good way to use small pieces of soap
is to place them In a wide-mouthed quart
bottle,and when half full add a lea'poonftil
of powdered saltpetre and a tablespotnful
of ammonia and a quirt of warm wateY.
The mixture is then ready for taking grease
out o! clothing .washing paint, windows, or
anything that need soap and .vatcr to
clcanfc it.

high tariff organ thought was most worth
celebrating the other day. And it declared
that "from the day George Washington
signed the fust tariff bill one hundred
years ago to the present time the idea of
protection has stood the passionate attacks
of its enemies.

ton to produce revenue for the infant re
public and afford protection to infant in
dustries averaged 8 per cent upon a limited
range of articles, Including comparatively
fe-v raw materials of manufacture. At the
end of a hundred years the revenue pro
duced bv the tariff is $100,000 .coo in excess 1
of the needs of the government. And the
coddled infants of that early day, grown
into stalwart and hoary monopolies, are
exacting a tariff of 47 pur cent, or a I mo it
six times as much as was required to'"pro
tect'' them a hundred years ago !
If the people of this country arc not
satisfied that these robust infants should
be put in process of weaning they are the
mos. stupid or long suffering tax payers of
which the annals of civilized government
hold anv record.
