About Albany daily democrat. (Albany, Or.) 1888-192? | View Entire Issue (June 21, 1889)
Daily Democrat Quite naturally it l the man ot season ed Intellect and ripe experience who does not seem fresh. The consumption of sugar la the United States last j-ear was 1,362,000 tons o' re fined and 106.500 tons of raw. There are 93,090 persons between the ages cf 4 and 20 in this state who will draw schael moncv n the state apportionment this year. The interest with which a voung man watches the growth of hair on his upper lip is only equaled by that with which the man of 40 watches its disappearance from the top of his head. The United S.ates possesses the largest vault and the largest deposit of money in the world. It can hold $ioo, ooo,oc, but the prospects are favorable for a call for increased storage of silver. There are about $JO,ooo, ooo in half dollars that do not budge. The window glass consumption for the last si months of tSSS was the largest eyer known.and there were soo.ooe more-boxes produced than the year previous. The im ports were also heavy. The number of pots'were increase during the year from 70 to 1000. The entire potato product of the country in 188S was :3o,oo,ooobushels,an increase of 90,000,000 bushels over the crop of 1SS7. The piinciple great potato producing states are New York, Michigan,Illinois and Min nesota, and Dakota territory. The supreme court has passed upon the railroad commission question, affirming the decision of the court below. This set tles the question against the commission appointed by Governor Pennoyer and in favor of the commission elee'ed by the legislature. It is semi-orScially stated that the price f silver during iSSS averaged 93 cents per ounce, as against 1.0: '2 in 1SS7. The decline in the price, it is claimed, caused a direct loss to Coloradomines of $1,456,738, or the return was that sum less than they would have received for the same ounces of silver duriner the previous year. It is a mistake to suppose that because milk is a liquid food it is at the same lime drink which is capable of satisfying the thirst of infants. Although milk appeases hunger, it makes thirst more intense after it has remained some time in the stomach and digestion has b( gun. It is thirst which causes healthy, breast-nursing infants to crv for long periods in many instances. There are many cases of indigestion due to weakness or insufficiency of the child's gastric juice, which would be greatly ben efitted or even cured if the child were al lowed an occasional drink of water. There is an old colored cobbler in Hartford. Conn., named A P Cleggett, who has for twenty-five years devoted himself to collecting and studying the history of rare copper coins. 1 lis son is the champion checker player of the State. Mr. Cleggett's collection of coins com prises a nearly complete set of pennies issued from 1793 to 1856. His collection is very valuable and contains many coins almost iin iwssible to obtain, 1 lis group of British cop pers is very interesting. Some of them date as fir back as 1700. Mr. Cleggett is always glad to welcome a well informed numismatist. The official statistics read at the last Mormon conference in Salt Lake city show that "the rhurch of Jesus Christ of Latter Hay Saints" has now 12 apoitles, 70 partriarclis, 3919 high priests, 11,805 elders, 2069 priest, 2292 teach ers, 1,610 deacons, 81,809 families 1 19,91 5 officers and membcrs,and49,303children under eight years of age, a total Mormon population of 153,911. The number of marriages for the six moths ended April 6, 1889, was 530; number of births,2754; new members hipticd, 488; ex communications, 113. OHIO NKGKOES KICKINC, The Hon. William Copeland , colored re publican member of the legislature, who enjoys the distinction of having received the highest vote ever cast for a colored man in Ohio, says in a public card that the greatest dissatisfaction exists among Ohio colored republicans. Governor Foraker has done less for them than Governor Hoadly did, and the national adminUtra tion utterly ignores them. Copeland says this is because Harrison personally dislikes the negro. As a result of this snubbing, Ohio blacks have concluded that the re publicans only want them for their rotes. Copeland says 5000 colored voters will re main away from the polls this fall. This alone would give Hamilton county and the legislature to the democrats, As the in coming legislature will probably serve three years under the new constitutional amend ments, which there is little doubt will carry.lt will elect successors to both Payne and Sherman. But tSere is a large and influential class of negroes who Insist on positive action, and arc circulating a call for a state convention of blacks to nomin ate a state ticket of their own race. Such ticket, the first of its kind in any northern state, would poll, It Is claimed. 15,000 rotes. Copeland says he w ill not run for the leg islature this fall, at he docs not believe he can be elected. It was a sight worth seeing watch young David Dudley Field, who is now approaching 90 years of age, as he ate a hearty dinner, smoked a big cigar and laughed at the jukes of the lawyers and judges at the Silliman banquet at Delraonico s. The great codifier is one of the biggest men in the United States, straight as a ramrod, with the flush of youth still upon his cheeks and hardly looking over 50. The Inter Ocean had a big scare the o:h;r day when it published that "if it should prove true that Congressman Reid, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, is among the dead at Couemaugh, and twy other Republican Congressmen so ill as not likely to take any part in a called session, 1 there will be grave doubts of the propriety of I calling it." j According to inexorable statistics, the num ber of people annually choked to death in Eng land while eating is greater than the number of people killed on the railways. And yet the English are said to be the slowest eaters in the world. Warner Miller looks better than he did a month ago. Perhaps it is healthic.- to lie out side the breastworks in warm weather than during the Winter months. 5 SPECIALTIES.
