Eureka, June 20. The overland stare for
Eureka was stopped by two men yesterday
merning.three miles
mail pouch was taken by them, cut open and
overhauled and then returned to the stage
driver. The pouch did not contain any regis
ter matter, and only the San Francisco letter
packages were taken. No cash was found.
An Immense Fire,
SilANCMiA, June 20. One-half of the im
porlant city of Lachan, in the province of
Szechmen, was recently destroyed by fire.
The conflagration raged four days. It is esti
mated that 1 200 persons were killed. Most of
them wcre.crusr.ed trying to escape from narrow
streets. I en thousands persons are homeless,
An Earthquake.

of carlhquake were felt last night. The-e was
one very heavy shock. No damage resulted.
I he earth has been shaking all day from all
directions. The flow of w ater from the springs
was increased, the water being turned to a
