After a free inquiry throughout the re gions devasted by water, through persons well calculated to judge, we are inclined to legard the following totals as much nearer the actual money loss In property destroyed than any aggregates previously published: At Johnstown and other points through out the Conemaugh Valley, the Pennsyl vania Railway losses in that region, and the loss of the Cambria Iron and Steel Company, $30,000.000 ; losses to other railway companies (in four s'ates,) $i,!5o, oeo ; damage from floods to real property, merchandise, etc., at cities and towns In Maryland, Virginia anj District of Colum bia, $5,000,000 ; at Wi'.liamsport, Pa., $5,- 000,000 ; in the Juniata Valley ,Pa.,$i,ooo, 000 ; in southern New York (twenty-five towns,) $1,500,000 ; probable loss to coal mines, $500,000 ; total, $44,250,000. These figures are given on the judgment of men on the ground without claim to an exact ness which is at this time, of course, im possible. At seven towns in the Cone maugh Valley there was $7,587,000 capital invested in business, while at Wllltamsport, Pa., the total capital invested was not lest than $23,200,000 A SXiloVAO LOW KR. The idea of adopting a national flower has evidently gained something of a hold upon the people of this country, and sug gestions without number, or at best limit ed only by the list of flowering shrubs and plants, continue to find their way into the newspapers. But there is not much like lihood that any of the multitudinous bios soms which help to beautify American landscapes will ever enjoy the distinction of being the one generally accepted nation al flower. National preferences, likes and dislikes, cannot be made or done away with by a set of resolutions, neatly drafted by some enthusiastic society, nor are thev amendable ts legislative enactment. Thev grow out of the surroundings and the tra ditions of a people, and so slowly that when they have at length been adopted, no one can tell definitely hew they cam; about. Another difficulty that will present Itself at he outset of such a movement, if inaug urated, is the fact that the United States are of too great extent, with no great diver sity of climate and national productions. We have no flower growing in the wild stat? that can properly be called national. The blossoms which school children de light in the east are unknown in many sec tions of the country, while California and many of the southern s'ates rejoice in a profusion uf floral beauty of which the people of the north and east have hard I v any conception. The French lily.the Eng lish rose, the Scotch thistle and the Irish shamrock each gair.eJ their pre eminence in a country to which they were indigenous and through which they were abundantly and quit equally distributed. It was easy lor them to become distinctively national in character. But in this country it will not be so easy a matter. It is not likely that the peop.e of a single state, even, could easily agree upon any one flower as their especial favorite. It is simply astonishing the amount of un necessary fuel men and women take in every twenty-four hours, and .vhen languor I and general liver depression is complained of they would be profoundly surprised to learn that the ill arose from excessive in dulgence of appetite. It is said that ''man is almost the only intelligent animal that eats when he is not well or not hungry, or that does not change and regulate his food according to the seasons and his needs. A great deal lighter diet and even a nearer approach to fasting will help rather than hurt most people, who have not physical labor to perform, as the hot weather comes on." NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
