About Albany democrat. (Albany, Or.) 1900-1912 | View Entire Issue (April 22, 1910)
Several Albany automobilists are driving their machines a good deal faster than the law allows, cndangeiing the lives of pedestrians There have been several close calls. The Democrat has been told by a man that he was in a car that went around a corner upon a business street going, at the rate of 35 miles an hour, as shown ty the indicator. It is time this kind ot business was stopped. This appears in an Albany booBter cir cular:"Albany haBno saloons. Linn and Benton counties are dry." That is one ot the best boosters Albany nas. It is a good advertisement The people who have been coming here because Albany is dry, are the kind we want. Those who leave because it is dry are the kind we don't want. If you have ever eaten corn beef, had your corns pared, eaten chicken or had chicken pox, eaten pork or seen a blind pig, winked at an old maid, or made a wry face, threw a stone at a cat or been in any kind of a catastrophe. turned your cuff, or cuffed your boy, in fact anything or nothing, get it ready, me census tuner is coming. Don t let the census talter miss any one. We, at least, want all that is coming our way. With our contracted limits the city ot Albany will have to hustle to make a showing in keeping witn ngures given. A SUCCESSFUL MINISTER. Portland. Anril la T?nv .T W Mo Dougall, for several years pastor of the M. E. church of Albanv and for the past three years in charge of the Mount Tabor Methodist church in Portland, has made a record since coming here that will be especially pleasing to the members of his old charge at Albany and to his many friends in thac city. The dedication of the beautiful new church building, constructed by Mr. McDougall at a cost of 16,000, took 1 place on Sunday, April 10, and at that time the entire church debt was wiped 1 out and $100 J more monev raised than enough to pay the amount back on the ' new building and its furnishings. It was a great triumph for Mr. McDoug-. all and his wife, and is the talk in j church circles in this city. i A few nights later when Mr. and Mrs. McDougall had been invited out to tea. the mamt,an nt iha i,.,...u fiii ..,. u . s vwiuui ....om uio iiew nuiiainKana BioociocK.wnen tne pastor anu ms wue came nome, tney found a surprise party awaiting them in the church. Mr. McDougall was seized upon and taken to the platform where tho chairman of the board of trustees, on behalf of the nlHcial board, presented the pastor with a large and beautiful silver loving cup, suitably en graved, showing the appreciation of the congregation for his efforts toward giving them the splendid new church uilding, the erection ot which was largely due to his untiring efforts and his ability as u manager. The pastor was completely taken by surpriso and, though gp""vally a ready speaker, this was one r ion when he had nothing to say. I - I; him several minutes to collect hiinaclf sufficiently to maku a ; suitable response to the magnificent gift. The congregation, happy in its new home, spent a most enjoyable evening in tho sanctuary with Iheir beloved pastor and his wife and the affair was made one of the most pleasant in the I lite ot Mr. und Mrs. McDougall. j j aiD.Yoacres ..'.
