Daily Democrat. The English and Canadian press almost universally rejoice over the election of Harrison. In Philadelphia where protection has heretofore ruled supreme, the democrats cut the republican majority down more than 12,000. Perpetual roses will notcUind severe told weather without protection. If grown the protection should be applied early in the fall. PoM'iveness is a most absurd foible. If you are in the vight, It lecsens your tri umph j if in '.he wrong, it adds shame to your defrat. The best paid drummers traveling lor Chicago houses are five men in the grocery trade who receive salaries of from $Sc;oto $10,000 a yar. . Blaine carried Marion county, Indiana (Harrison's home,) four years ago by 226 majsrity, but Cleveland carries it this year by 37S, making a gain of over Goo. When putting away the silver tea or coffee j.3t which is not used eveay day,lay a little stick across the top under the cevei-. This will al'ow the fresh air to get !n, and prevent mustiness. Mix a little carbonate of soda with the water in which flowei s are Immersed, a nd it will preserve them a fortnight. Com mon saltpetre is also very good preservative. We will have made a long s'.ep towards a true civilization when we begin to regard me moral ana inteue.'tual points of our children as critically as we now do the physical points of our stock. The bed of the ocean, says a foreign writer, is to an enormous extent covered with lava and pumice sne. Still more remarkable it is to find the floor of the ocean covered in msny parts with the dust of meteorites. The Field and Farm has hls tinlvert warning: Beware of the ITnstern fruit t.-ee peddler who is abroad in the land again, and acts as if he had come to stay all wiiuer, His greatest iault is that he is always re- ommendhig some new variety of remark- ab'e g.owth, hardiness and produttiveoe -s and demands .'abulous prices. He is armed with a long list of testimon' fiom paiiies one never caw nor heard of to substantiate what he ells you, and, If you will take the trouble to inquire, the chances are you will Itul your home nurseryman has all the new and choice varir'.les of fruits they have in he East. With yery little labor, washing silver in water in which a teaspoonful of ammonia has been added, will keep the silver with a white polish, and glassware will polish much mo. e easily ifwushed In water to which ammonia h;.s been added. County roads and the advertising col umns of many papers are beginning to be , infested, with sharpers of all kindswho make a special point of "working the granger" at about this time of the year. Look out for them : and by all means do not sign your name for a stranger to any kind of a docu . ument. There is no mare distasteful sort of liter ature than the party papers now coming to hand, printed just before the election, and full of glowing assurances that the obdurate ballot swingers have made a mockery. They suggest the patent medicine illumi nations that sometimes adorn newspaper interiors of before taking and after taking remedial nostrums. The curious and those who find anything cheerful In the . retuins.may take a sort of morbid interest in comparing the predictions with the cold figures. We frequently hear of buildings destroy ed by fire which originated in the ash-box. This box should be lined with sheet iron, and set at lea ten feet from any combus tible object. It should have a tight cover, that no sparks may be blown from It, It is best to have one-half the cover hinged to the other half and held down by a but ton. Even then ashes should be searched for fire be'ore they are put In the box ; this Is a matter about which one cannot be too careful. The top of the box should be tight so that the ashes may be kept dry, It Is said there are at le ast twenty re publicans In Albany who expect to hold office under Harrison. They do say that Capt, Humphrey has his eye on the office of U. S. District Attorney now held by the scholarly and able Judge McArthur. Po litical service it Is said will be the chief strength of an applicant's c'aim for position and this gives the Captain a dead thing. The well-known photographer, An schuetz of Lissa, has for some years been experimenting with photographs of the flight of cannon balls from the moment of their projection to their striking the target or object a'med at. Last month on the try ing grounds of the Uruson Works, near Buckau, he demonstrated the perfection of his studies. He succeeded in obtaining remarkable and highly Interesting results. His plates were submitted to the expert, Professor Dr. Koenig of the Berlin Uni versity, who was perfectly able to make therefrom the desired practical calculations. He established the fact that the projectile thus photographed had a velocity of 400 meters a second, and that the duration of the light thrown on the photographic plate did not exceed the ten thousandth part of a second.
