A Miller, TELEGRAPHIC NEWS Fuller Conflrreed. Washington, July 20. The Senate closed its doors at 12:30 p. m. to-day, and proceeded in secret to the formal consider ation of Melville W. Fuller's nomination as chief justice of the United States su preme. At 1 o'clock the upper lobbies and upper committee rooms were cleared and the occupants driven down stairs, so that the doors and windows of the Senate chambers might be opened without risk of the betrayal of the proceedings. Fuller was confirmed. The vote was fortv-one to twentv. An Author Dead. Newblrg, July 20. E. P. Roe died ear ly this morning. Confidence in the sugar markets is shown by the fact that the Oregon dock Is now loaded with sugar for shipment to Portland to-morrow morning by the steamship State of Calif ornia. There are fully 300 packages of re fined sugar on the wharf, all for shipment to Mason, Ehrman & Co., the branch house of the San Francisco firm of Mason, Ehrman 30 Co. The Occiden tal hotel was the scene of unwonted fes tivities to-night, for which E. D. McEIrby, state superintendent of public schools ot Oregon, was ret ponsible. He had tendered the delegates from this state a grand re ccptior and had provided a string band to discourse music. The parlors and halls of the parlor floor had been profusely decorat ed by skilled hands with flags, flowers and Oregon fruits. Up stairs several rooms, including a portion of the hail, had been thrown together and set apart for a refec tory where thechoiccst fruits and ice cream were served to all delegates. A great many ' visitors from the delegations of other states ca led, notably from California, and were regaled with all that was on hand. Pamph lets descriptive of Oregon in general, and Portland, Roscburg and other cities in pnr ticular,wcre distributed.
