Mr. E. D, Whitney, of Whitney, De Vicar & Co., has just returned from a trip to Coos bay, where he went in the interests of the Glasgow Coal Land and Lumber Company, to examine into the resources of that section. Mr. Whitney represents large Eastern capitalists, who contemplate establishing furniture factories at Glasgow, and ono object of his journey was to examine tho many varieties of timber native to that region suitable for making furniture. Ho went in by way of Drain and re turned by the ltoseburg route, following the lino of tho railroad surveys in and out, and some idea of the need for rail road connection with the bay can be formed from the fact that in making the trip from the Southern Pacific andback he traveled in five wagons, three steam ers, two row boats, and six hours in the saddle and also walked for some dis tance. He found the country along the proposed line in a very primitive state, Iota of unsurveyed government land, and lots which is surveyed but not taken up, and finer timber and a greater num ber of valuable varieties than can be found in any other part of the North west. In a bank at Marshfield he saw the handsomest desks and counters to be fonnd in the Northwest, all made from nativo woods. Ho says he never saw a country piosessing such great and var led resources in fertile soil, fine timber, coal and gold mines, and so many Btrcams and water courses rendering all theso easily accessible. He went all around tho bay, and pro nounces Glasgow the most perfect nat ural town8ito thoro and the only one having room for future growth and de velopment, and a harbor protected from the northwest and northeaBt windB, and with two miles of water front, with a depth of thirty feet at low tide. Early settlers on the bay did not look far enough ahead and failed to make cal culation for futuro growth, nor at that time did they realize tho necessity for deep water frontage for outgoing vessels and they had no conception of the fu turo commerce of the section. A largo force of men is at work clear ing off tho sito for tho town of Glasgow and Mr. 11. A. Mose, late of the O. It. & N. Co. K loft yesterday to take the gener- ', al management of tho proporty. The first thing ho will attend to will be the building of a 1200-foot wharf." A saw mill will be got under way at once, and Mr. T. Aweng goes down with Mr. Mobs to select the location and arrange the preliminaries for construction. . Tho next thing will be a $25,000 hotel, and when theso things are completed tho company will begin tho development of their coal mines. A Sullivan diamond drill will be Bent down at onco to test tho coal measures known to exist, and to bore for the bedt of bituminous coal supposed to oxist be low the measures ox posed. Two linos for railroads have been sur veyed to tho bay, and it la expected that engineors will, within ninety days, be in the field to Burvey u lino to connect with tho Huntington system, Orogonian.
