Axorrespondont of tlio Heal Estate Roviow, of Portland, has the following to cay of this section : "Having seen aovoral articles in the papers latoly regarding Southwestern Oregon In general, nml Coos Hay In ar ticttlnr, I notice that the articles nil np pear to have neon written by persons who examined the country In behalf ot some one particular lino ot business, en tirely overlooking all other resources, thereby doing us a great injuBtico. by leading pcoplo to think that the indus tries referred to are the only ones ot great enough extent or valuo to deserve investigation; whilo tlio facta are that we havo many other resources that will provo ot as great, if not greater, value as tlio coal and lumber. As stated in one ot the articles reler rcd to, the principal reason why our section of country is not bolter known to tlio public is tlio fact that at present wo havo no It. It. connection with the rest of the world, people now having to come lioro by stage or steamer, both of which modes of conveyance are much too slow for this progressive age. Cut wo now rejoice in the fact that wo have tlio surveys made and the entire subsid ies raised for the building of two linos of road to an Eastern connection one running through the county to tho south cast of us and the other opening up tho country to the north and cast,- while in addition to tho above mentioned roads, the Southern Pacific System will have thoir engineers in tho field in less than thirty days to survey a road from tho main line to deep water harbor on Coos Bay, as they fully realize the importance ot the trade of this section as soon 'as it shall become known to the public and an entrance given them. Tho competition of the rail roads will open tho markets of tho world to our products, coal and timber being the only ones that have received any attention from the outside capitalist, and no at tention seems to have been given to our farming, fruit and stock raising, ship building, tanneries, etc., any one of which is enough to make the country rich. Our coal mines, though worked for years, have never been thoroughly explored, only ono mine being worked at present, with an out-put of some 8000 tons per month. We are now, however, to have a thorough exploration made of the fields by the Glasgow Coal Land and Lumber Company, a company hav ing a capital of over f 1,000,000, who are now putting in diamond drills to ascer tain the fall extent of the rich fields known to underlie the neus already ex jjosed. The company have several thousand acres of land, the best loca tion on the bay for a city, the land slop ing gently back from their two miles of water front, with SO feet of water. This company is doing more for the develop ment of our section than has ever be fore been done by anyone, and our peo ple should give them every assistance in their power, for it is such people, who put in improvements and bring in set tiers that we want, not a lot of real es tate "boomers." Situated as we are, about half way be tween San Francisco and Portland, jkjs sessing the largest and most accessible harbor the only one which can be en tered with safety during all kinds of weather having tributary to us over 10,000 square miles of territory, and up on the completion of the railroads now under survey and for which the entire Bubsidy has been .raised, we will have 23,000 square miles of the richest farm ing and grazing lands added to our pres ent magnificent territory, with a climate posseting the advantages of both Ore gon and California, without the ex tremes of either, with the greatest var iety and extent of fine woods, myrtle, maple, oak, alder, pine, fir, and the lamous f ort Orlom" cedar, luuntl no where else in the United States, and many other resources. We offer to the stock raiser, tho fruit raiser, the farmer, the ship-builder, the gold, iron, copper, or coal miner, the manufacturer, the home seeker, and last but not least, the health seeker, inducements not to be found in any other one section of coun try in the United States, and we will show every courtesy to all who will coino and examine our resources, and will gladly givo all tho information and aslsta'-ico in our power to those who cannot come in person, but who will take tho trouble to inquire." priattonB, na well as fdjHBortlons ot tho state, and ho oxIBHho hope that congress would DtfSJjrly date take favorable action oMIlB'fcat rail way project of tho Col uuililli Which ho said would open tip n continuous navl gatlon ot 1000 miles, practically from tho Itocky mountains to the sea. The Oregon items worn all passed as- report ed from tho eominltloe, and no member Is 11101 o jubilant than ltcprcxentativo Hermann over the result. K. W. Potter, the postmastor at Klin Creek, Nob., says ho has personal knowledgo of eovoral cases of rheuma tism, in that vicinity, that havo been permanently cured by Uhamborlaln's Pain Ualin, attor other remedies were used without benefit. lie has sold it at his drug store thero for fivo years and sayB ho novcr know It to fall, that "any enstomor who once usos Chamberlain's Pain Balm will have nothing else in stead." Forsalo by II. Sencstacken. at Marshfield and Empire. I. S. Doten, justice of tho poaco and merchant ot Bristol, III., says ho can reeommond St. Patrick's Pills. "I havo used them," he says, "and know where of I speak." Any one troubled with constipation or billiousncsa will find them a friend. Thoy aro prompt and certain in their action and produce a pleasant cathartic. For sale by Henry Sengstacken, Marshfield and Empire. Annual Meeting'. Kepresenta tivo Hermann made boijio very eiTectivo observations at the closo of the debate on the river and harbor bill. He con gratulated congress on the passage of the most satisfactory bill that had ever passed congress, lie said that while this would be welcome tidinuB to the people of tho great lakes on the North, the Gulf on the South and the large and smaller rivers of the Atlantic side, it would be more heartily welcomed by the expectant people of the Pacific Northwest. lie said it was appropriate at this stago of a bill in which the water ways of his own state had been so loy ally remembered to read to the house u statemont he had just received from Major Ilaudbury, from Portland, Or., which announced that the recent sound ings of the Columbia river bar disclosed a depth of 25'.. feet at mean low water and ho said this was already a great triumph and u most conclusive argu ment in favor of tho river and harbor SJblluy of the government.
