A stranger, accustomed to tho nc live scenes of a more tliiokly popula ted region, on visiting Curry county, is naturally impressed witli" the Won flint its resources arc limited, its pop illation pnrVo and poverty-Ktriekon, ' nml its prospect in the future any thing but encouraging Such are tho views which we hnvo heard expressed in past years, mid only n somewhat fnmiliur ncquninttmcc with its terri tory and its cituens has hnd the e licet to dispel this error, and enable us to form n just and correct opinion on the subject. In the carlicryoarsof the history of the county, mining formed the lead ing prodvetive industry of its people, hilcn few years Inter, stock raising assumed n prominenco which it still mnintains. There is no better sheep anil entile range in the world than the rolling prairie and grass covered hills which are found on llogue river n em its mouth, and also on Sixes nml Flor a's creek. There are also some excel lent stock farms south of Kllensburg as far as Chctco. Many of tho "sheep men" of that county have been pros perous and are "well to do." Some three years ago, the value of the salmon fisheries of lloguc river and Chctco became more apparent than formerly, and K. D. Hume con structed the large canning establish ment at Ellensburg, where tho busi ness of canning fish in all its details is done to the greatest perfection and with the most perfect machinery known to the trade. Tho product of this business as carried on in Curry county aggregates a lnrgesum annual ly, and, during the reason, furnishes employment to a large number of men. Mr. Hume has, at great ex pense, secured lauds along both banks of the river for some distance above Ellenshurg, thereby protecting his business from being at any time re stricted or cut oir by riparian owners. Mr. Miller, an old settler at the mouth Of CllCtCO. and n California onmnrn. w - -w---..w-b aBt , nun siyieu incuccuiuntni nml unen tal Company," are the principal par ties interested in fishing in that stream, and the product of their fish eries is put up for market in barrels. Should tho market for these fish ap preciate to the utandard of four years ago, there would soon be a cannery established there. 4 JIIXIXO l.VTKBESTS. For nearly thirty years the mining of gold has formed a leading branch of industry in Curry county, and al though the bench claims arc not as productive as they were in ISoO, con siderable quantities of gold dust arc annually bartered for necessaries by! the residents. There is a lead of gold-bearing sand about six miles north of Port Orford and several mile from the beach, which was prospected tno six yearn ago, and upon which mmhc mining has been fcince carried on by C. Mad den, Esq. The principal owners are Madden and the Cox brothers ; the the former, who owns a large tract of mining ground, is taking out come gold at the present time, and, with means to open these claims proporly, and work them on a large ?calo, wc do not doubt tho property would prove valuable. LUMBER. The business of manufacturing and bhipping white cedar lumber from Port Orford was inaugurated nearly -twenty years ago, and for Rome years was very profitable, but the decline in the market for that timber and the difficulty of f hipping regularly from that porLjiaA had the effect to suspend tho business. There is a mill of ca pacity for 15 or 20 thousand feet per day at Port Orford, owned by a com pany known as the Port Orford Cedar Company, who are also ownor of a large tract of land containing cedar timber, but tho company are bome what involved and it is doubtful (un less the harbor of refugo should be lo- cated there) ..win ever oe resume,, njJ&T02& WOIE Some ten years ago, Geo.
