Oregon With tKe presentation of three n«>-act plays produced and staged •ntirely by student management, the Crater speech and drama de partment closed a most successful year. The classes participated in one nrctice and four regular speech tournaments. Fourteen students were taken to the Southern Oregon C 'liege tournament where in com petition with such schools as Eugene, Mars' Feld. North Bend, Ashland, Grants Pass and Medford they gain i ed six outstanding and eighteen pro ficient ratings. Fifteen students were taken to the Linfield Colle.;- contest where nine finalists, four seconds and one third were gained At the district tournament in Med ford against some of the stiffest competition in the state two sec onds, two thirds and three fourths were placed. Following are the students who placed: Lois Vanderpool—outstand ing in debate and oratory at South ern Oregon, third in extemporan eous in District meet. Jim Roberts—outstanding in bate at S.O.C.E. Mary Lou Koch—outstanding poetry reading at S.O.C.E. Doreen Bohnert—second place interview at Linfield, fourth in dis cussion in district. Don Johnson—finalist in three events at Lnfield, third place in af ter dinner speaking, and second Johnson and Bob Johnston. The Dram - group have stage I three plays this year and proceeds from these productions have fin anced all the speech trips with a balance on hand to start another year. The ‘‘Jerome"’ award for the best male performance and one for the best female performance will be presented again this year. A trophy will be given to each of three win ners together with a plaque with the names of the winners for display in the trophy case. Three one-act plays were given as an honorarium for Wink Newnham. The speech and drama groups gave two dances, and sold Crater High decals. In addition to the winners whose names have been given, sixty-five other students have received speech and dramatic training and have had considerable classroom participation in both.
