Pro viding public access to lakes and streams is another important fish management activity. REGULATIONS A synopsis of current angling regulations may be obtained by writing to the Oregon State Game Commission, P.0 Box 3503, Port land, Oregon 97208 or may be picked up at any hunting and fishing license outlet. The synopsis includes information on license fees, seasons, bag and length limits, closed waters, special seasons, and a small map depicting regulation zones into which the state has been divided Changes in the regulations are made each year, but certain general principles follow. Summer trout season opening date varies from the middle of April to late May, de pending on locality. Warm-water game fish such as bass, catfish, crappie, and perch may be angled for throughout the year. Late fall, winter, and early spring fishing is confined primarily to steelhead and salmon. The synop sis should always be consulted for detailed regulations. The Rogue River system, in southwestern Oregon is the other major drainage heading in the Cascades and flowing to the ocean. The Rogue was made famous by Zane Grey and other writers and still retains much of its glamour although industrial and agricul- FISHING IN OREGON Fishing is great sport in the State of Oregon.’ Nearly a half million anglers are licensed an-* Dually and the number is increasing each year. Oregon is fortunate in having more than 15,000 miles of fishing streams and hundreds of lakes The streams range from large, slow, meandering lowland rivers to bouldered, rushing, mountain brooks The lakes vary in size from those covering thousands of acres to quiet forested ponds that can be spanned by a good caster. Although much of the fishing water is on public lands, a considerable portion is bound ed by ’and in private ownership and permis sion must be obtained from the land-owner to fish from the bank Information to follow is brief and of a gen eral natuie No effort has been made to de tail all of the angling opportunities. It may be generally stated, however, that sport fish ing opportunities in Oregon include some type of outstanding angling throughout the entire year. S. Oregon has the only two baby elephants born in the U.
