An increase in freight rates would not help the farmer. -What the farmer needs and what he must have to transportation and farm labor at reasonable cost. Labor now represents the largest single item of expense in railway op eration, just as it represents a large item of expense in farming. On the farm as on the railroad, working hours have been reduced, but the hourly or daily wage has increased. If the trainmen really want to help the farmer, let them withdraw their demands for wage increase, as they are already among the highest paid classes of labor in the world.
