MBB ilEMU MM HtEHEI American Legion Endow ment Fund is Growing i: . ----- On the day war was declared with Germany, Enoch B. Carlson, postal employe in Portland, Oregon, beat hi* thirty-first birthday by 13 days and enlisted in the army. He was commissioned from the first officers’ training camp at The Preside, Sar Francisco, and sailed for the wa. zone December 13, 1917. He finally was assigned to the military police of the 6th corps, then he saw duty in the Meuse-Argonne. He returned to the ' states June 30th, 1919 Today Carlson is ill in the Unitei State* veterans'* hospital No. 94 American Lake, Washington, where he has been since August, 1924, when the American Legion aided ' im. Before that he waa in the hospital at Boise, Idaho. His illness is the result of being gassed and an attack of influenza while across. There are thousands of war vet erans who today need attention and for whom the American Legion, in conjunction with the government agencies, is trying to obtaip perma nent cure. It is the continuation of its Endeavor to aid disabled veteran: and for the care of veterans’ orphans that the American Legion endow ment fund of $5,000,000 is being established. Oregon is now working to raise this state’s share of the fund. The Legion’s persistent effort obtained hospitalization for Carlso i.' Recently he has been critically ill. He was sick three years before ob taining hospitalization, or enough compensation to take care of himself. Carlson has been unable to work since 1920. He tried vocational training at Oregon Agricultural col lege, but after six weeks was forced to give it up. The Legion was ap pealed to and aid was obtained. .. ..
