funds the school board has been un­
able to meet requests for a big raise

is available for next year’s work and
the board has decided to use all of
this increase for the payment of larger
salaries.

Douglas county holds the record so
far for the number of dogs licensed by
the county, 1100 dogs bearing tho coun­
ty license tags.
A new wage scale advancing the
minimum of >4.80 hitherto paid to >5
a day, was announced by the saw mill
owners of Bend.

George A. Briscoe, who has been su­
perintendent of the Ashland schools
for nine years, has been reelected for
a two-year term.
Roseburg will be a stopping place for
aircraft which It Is alleged will soon
be plying between San Francisco, Port­
land and Seattle.
The Ashland Canning company clos­
ed a most successful season with a
total pack exceeding that of any pre­
vious year and valued at >38,500.
County Agent Scott of Clackamas
county announces that the last carload
of eggs Bhlpped to the New York mar­
ket netted the producers 55 cents.
All high schools in Southern Oregon,
except Eugene and Roseburg, have
withdrawn from the Oregon State De­
bating league because of the prava-
lence of Influenza.
Burglars entered the hardware store
of Wardle & Campbell at Carlton and
secured about >145 worth of pocket
knives and razors. Eight dollars was
l&ken from the till.
A contract has been signed at Salem
whereby Henry* L. Bents of Aurora will
sell his entire crop of hops for the year
1920 to an English firm at a stipulated
price of 37 cents «a pound.
In the biggest day’s catch of the
past yoar, 104 offending motorists
were arrested by Portland police one
day last week on various charges of
violating the traffic laws.
The Baldwin & Swope Construction
company, recently organized at Hood
River, has been awarded the contract
for building a new schoolhouse at
Mosier to be 90 by 70 feet
Mrs. Earl Stitt, who was burned
while starting a fire In the kitchen
range with oil waste, died at Lebanon.
She was the English war bride of
Earl Stitt, a young overseas service
man.
Tho 1919 census of the Umatilla pro­
ject, just published by the reclama
tlon office, shows that the total value
of the crops grown during the year Is

One hundred China pheasants from
the Simpson pheasant farm at Spring-

The city of Roseburg, through its at­

Remonstrance against the paving of
Railroad street was made9 at the
meeting of the Albany city council by
abutting property owners and may ro-
sult in the former decision to pave
the street being rescinded.

The Marlon oonnty court went oa

community house for the American
Legion, as authorized by the last leg­
islature.
Boys and girls between the ages of
16 and 18, who are employed and who
have not finished the eighth grade,
must attend part time school In Ore­
gon City, according to an order Issued
by the school board.
Marion county through the county
court, has offered to contribute >25,-
000 to the construction of the pro­
posed new Salem hospital on condi­
tion that the remainder of the neces­
sary >100,000 la made available.
Tbe Inventory and appraisement of
the estate of Dr. Bernard Daly of Lake-
view. who died recently, shows a total
value of >733,628.67, more than >500,-
000 of which Is In government, muni­
cipal, school, county and road bonds.
By a' vote of 217 to 30 the city of
Seaside has bonded Itself for >263,000
for the construction of a pier into the
Pacific ocean, a system of bulkheads
on the ocean front and a new hard-
surface driveway through the entire
city.
The recent threat of labor to petition
state officials to oust from their em­
ployment all married women whose
husbands are capable of providing for
their support, appears to have stimu­
lated rather than deterred marriages
of girls on the state payroll.
The students of Baker high school
have purchased a new, high class mo­
tion picture machine and have booked
a long series of excellent film pro­
ductions, which will be projected upon
the screen In the high school audi­
torium one evening in every week.
Robbers broke Into the vault of the
Scio State bank at Scio and escaped
with an unknown quantity of Liberty
bonds, War Savings Stamps and some
cash secured from rifling the contents
of boxes, which may total as high as
>50,000. No attempt was made to open
the main safe.
A questionnaire is being sent to all
the high school principals In the state
by Dr. John Landsbury, dean of the
school of music of the State University,
in an attempt to gain their coopera­
tion in making high school credits in
music worthy of being rated as uni­
versity entrance credits.

minister of the state In attendance.
Baptist leaders met at the White
Temple In Portland to formulate plans
for the nation-wide campaign for >100,-
000,000. Oregon’s apportionment of
this fund will be >1,450,000, it was an­
nounced.
Because Oregon and California face
an “unprecedented shortage of water
for either hydroelectric power or irri­
gation purposes.” the Geary Invest­
ment corporation of Oregon, and the
California-Oregon Power company, a
California corporation, will bury the
hatchet this year and allow water stor­
age in the Upper Klamath lake.
Approximately 400 acres of worthless
swamp land In Douglas county will he
made worth between >300 and >400 per
acre by the new drainage project
outlined by Professor C. F. Johnson,
drainage expert of the Oregon Agri­
cultural college, and County Agent C.
J. Hurd. The lands are situated In th»
Looking Glass and Yoncalla valleys.
According to reports announced by
the city health bureau there are 11
cases of sleeping sickness in Portland
at present. Deaths from the disease
to date total eight, of which six were
reported in December, one in January
and one In February. Sleeping sick­
ness is comparatively new here, and
no record of cases was kept prior to
last December.
Receipts of the automobile depart­
ment for February, 1920, as shown by
a report Issued by the secretary of
state were >200,856, as against >38.-
796.50 for the same month in 1919.
The large' Increase Is due, according
to Sam A. Kozer, in charge of the
motot vehicle department; to the near
law, which increased the license fees
for all classes of motor vehicles.
Eight democrats and five republicans
have filed formal declaration of their
candidacy for delegates to their re­
spective party conventions. Fully a
score of republicans have been men­
tioned as possible candidate» or hav»
expressed a desire to be delegates, but
they have not taken the trouble to
file with the secretary of state. Half
a dozen democrats are preparing to
file.
