The world bad just witnessed an excellent public ownership lesson in Erauce. ‘ After a determined effort by organization« of employes of the government to prove that they were su;>erior to their employ er (the state), and to reduce it to obedience, the Paris strike has col- la,»sed. Never has the inherent weakuess uf goverumeut ownership I mm - ii more d e a r ly teveftletl. On the one hand there are charges, vir tually admitted to l»e true^ that favorifeisni and other serious abuses have pervaded the French postal and telegraph service Iteeause poli tics has largely controlled appoint ments and administration. The conditions are not peculiar to the French people. The further any government extends its operations in the direction qf public service or industry the greater danger of cor ruption it creates. On the other liaud, the French postal.Atm ploy es and telegraph operators have not only utterly- disregarded the public convenience but have openly defied the government* authority; led by political agitaiors they have under taken to rule in their own way and for their own ends. When the ambitious rot that has taken root in a class of republicans oomes to a finish, the Grand Old Party will again assort itself in this state aud nation. Someone asserts that George Har rison, the Chicago aeronautic cube lived in Sherman county. We do not think so. » Shertimwconnty has never had a resident fool like tint,. The New York legislature is not disposed to be in a hurry to pass a state primary law; if it is waiting to find one that worlds with perfect smoothness the delay is likely t > be prolonged. Tobacco users ap|>ear to be the most contented of mortals; they’ve sent no lobby to Washington to op pose the increase of tax on what, they admit is unquestionably great luxury. “Neither does Weston care auy thing about the school, aud we will certainly do nothing further to maintain it,” remarks the leader. “ In the light-of- events, it* location here was a curse to Weston.” The Emery girl and her Japanese hubby were about to be put off the train a few days ago, traveling to Salt Lake city from Beattie. What drift of the “scum of creation” ap pears to be following this happy couple. t. Every ‘now and then’ a dirigible balloon or an aeroplane takes sudden and unexpected dive to solid earth, just to remind the aeio „enthusiasts that the law of gravita ition discovered by Sir Isaac Newton ; has not strayed afar. f ------_ — The death at the age of 73 years of Miss Josephine Wolf, a wealthy woman long a resident of Walla Walla, is announced. A resident of that city for full half a century, without special human attachments or iifterests, and with no kuowu relatives, this woman lived her lone day aud passed on into the shadow. The first impulse is to pity her for the joys of life that she has missed, the companionships of kindred aud the loves of home; but, as suggested by. The Oiegoniao, since she never knew these she could uot miss them iu the sense of those who are bereft. And as, ac cording to report, she provided iu her will a home for dumb animals otherwise homeless, she uncovered in her nature a w tmau’s tenderness for helpless, lonely creatures, and gave evidence of the possession ol the true feminine instict of love and service. According to reports received by Dr.Yennev, secretary of the Oregon state board of health, there threat ens to lie a serious spread of tuber euloeis among poultry ftoeks of this state. Dr. McCluie, chief of the state bureau of animal industry, advises Dr. Yenney that a flock of 51» chickens, bought at Eugene and taken to Forest Grove, was found to l>e affected with the disease and that 16 died at last accounts. He estimates that 80 percent, of the flock was affected. Dr. McClure reported in addition that a large flock of chickens at Pendleton was found to lie affected with tubercu losis but that no connection had Is>eri«established between the dist rics named. A t Pendleton it was found that tiiedisease bad attacked furkeys in an adjoining ffeld, and also that pigs had been seized with the disease after eating dead chick ens and turkeys. The annual report of the depart ment of Agriculture gives the val ue of farm products of lt»08 at $6, 978,000,000, the most extraordinary amount in the history of the world. It is atH )iil four times the value of the pioducts of the mines of tbe „United States of America, includ ing coal and petroleum. Corn is reported worth $1,616,000,(MM); hay $621,000,000; wheat660,000,000 l»u wortb$620,000 000; oat* 70s, 000,000 If the house of cotfgress would lake a day oft and dig up some new business The Old Reliable would suggest the subject of a cheaper parcels post and a greater utilization of the 43,000 rural deliveries whose wagons are ruuuing daily with light loads.
