During tee Perm anently looated at lasaisRwMcwmwrwMMKaaaaKaas Woman ef It W k « l H a ir Comae From. Dr. J, F. James MORO, .................... OREGON recent panic In iw Fork some of the metropolitan new« papers remarked spitefully that most of the frightened depositors lining up to w ithdraw their money from bank« suspected of being weak were women. But no newspaper thought it uecee- aery to comment on the fact that men only—men who had been trusted and depended upon—were responsible for the nnbappy financial conditions. W hy should men sneer at women if they exhibit anxiety In regard to their savings7 As a rule, the deposits repre sent the results of years of tolling at wages below the male average for work In the same line. These same papers added to the plc- tureeqUeueaa of their pages by pictur ing gray haired widows weeping lie- cause all they had In the world was held by these banks. In many cases It was all th a t stood between them and the poorbouse. A man may repair his lasses, but such women cannot do so. W hether or not there Is any truth In the charges matters very little. Man claims to expect so little from woman It la amaxlng that he should feel sur prised over what, according to his doc trine, Is a natural display. The probe« bllttles are that there la little more than a grain of truth In any of these stories. In the case o f one bank at least I know from personal olm erva tlon that few women stood In the Uns. The leeeon in this Is that women should trust leas to the representa tions of oUy tongued male capitalists and acquire business knowledge enough to put their funds In places where they wUl not be affected by changes in the money market. There are other ways of Investing money than In banks. Investigate them. There m ight be less money In the banks—fo r from tjie statement It looks as If women were th rifty nowsilays— but It would afford banks a leas con venient scapegoat.
