Hla w ife w as s cold woman, whom he bad married for her fortune. She had given herself, but her fortune she had retained In her own ■'rtfeeplug Vainly had their younger daughter, Fanny, tried to shield her father from the mother's reminders that she held the purse strings. Rich ard Shirley had been married, but he had never known whut It waa to be mated. A kual th e B la st« . In the middle of bright day» a door or window tnay lx* opened, the width d e pending on the temperature outside Nothing gives the anim als more com foi l or la mofe economical than a lib eral supply of betiding. Bawduat and machine shavings are clean, easily han died, good absorbents, but possess UP tie mauurlal value. Hay, straw or leaves, however, add much of value tc the compost pile when saturated more or less with the m oisture o f the stable and will be needed for the garden Oi shrubs and lawn next spring. It 1» economy to blanket the horses, wbeth er the stuble be cold or not. In a cold stable a thick blanket should be used, while In u warm one a thin one of bur lap or other like material will suffice. Aside from the warmth It gives, the blanket keeps the coat smooth and clean.—8. T. Maynard In Suburban Life. T u b e r c n lo a la 1» H e * e . A good many cases of tuberculosis In hogs, we fear, can be traced to the creamery, due to the fact that the skim milk haa not bean heated to a sufficiently high temperature or kept at that temperature long enough to de stroy the germs, says K im ball’« Dairy Farmer. Ordinarily It la assum ed that herds la-conje. Infected through bring ing other anim als am ong them, but the question of tuberculosis Infection through the skim milk from the cream ery Is becoming so'serious that it will eventually lead to compulsory pasteuri sation of skim milk. Indeed, this is now required In som e states, notably Minnesota, but the trouble la that the buttermakers do not heat the akin» milk hot enough or keep it at that tem perature long enough.
