W e are highly gratified at this hap­
py turn ot events. It preserves the
railway to the people, without the
intervention of the courts. T he
road has opened up a region the re­
sources and possibilities of which
were little known, and has paid be­
yond the expectations, even of those
who built it, and the Shaniko exten­
sion has been equally successful.
Crook county is rapidly settling
up. F o r it the area of large stock
ranges is passing and the perioo of
small farms is opening. A t its pres-
e.„ rate of development it will no. be
long belore it will be able to furnish
a large traffic for the railroad. Lying
to the eastward ot Shaniko is the

John Day valley, one of the most
promising of the isolated sections of
Oregon. If it had a railroad it would
rival the W allamet valley for the
' production of grain, fruit, butter and
’5 cheese. It is a region without trans­
portation facilities, though the S um ­
ter valley railway is heading that
way. In the absence of transporta­
tion facilities the people have no in­
ducement to grow grain and fiuitfor
shipment and stock raising and min­
ing have been the principal industry
since early days. Many of the buttes
and canyons which skirt the valley,
are rich in gold, silver and copper.
Coal and cobalt are also known to
exist there and petroleum seepage
has been found. By a system more
economical than any which can he
planned by a rival concern the CSRy
is prepared to develop this region also.
