Or shall we reduce th e level of se r vices and r»“^ i n o u r p resen t tax s tr u c tu re ? ” He explained that G overnor H atfield and th e sta te d e p a rtm e n t of finance since last A pril w o rk ed on th e budget su b m itte d to th e le g islatu re in D ecem ber. O r iginal re q u e sts from the v arious sta te agencies totalled $496 m il lion. “T he gov ern o r and th e d e p artm en t of finance scru tin ized th ese re q u e sts in the sam e w ay th a t (lie W ays and M eans com m ittee is now doing" he em p h a sized. "M uch to th e dism ay of all agencies, including education, $90 m illion w as trim m ed from those req u ests, leaving a $405 m illion b u d g et w hich w ould m a in ta in — but not im prove sta te services. "N ow th e W «ys an d M eans co m m ittee say s it w ill c u t $20 m illion m ore from th e $405 m il lion b u d g et,” Y tu rrl added. "If th ey can do it m ore pow er to them . It w ould lie w onderful.
