Mrs. Allan Tom, presi dent, presided* at the business meeting. The nominating committee, Donald Macnab, Mrs. Martha Brady and Mrs. WycliPfe Rice presented names for new officers for the coming year, and there being no other nominations, they were elected as follows: Mrs. Charles Wilson, president, Mrs. Joe Morris, vice president; Mrs. George Fox, secretary, and Mrs. Wm. Convict Thomas Blackburn, atop water tower at Joliet penitentiary, turns a deaf ear as Prison Chaplain E. Grey W ininfer pleads with him to come down. After shouting insults at prison guards for five hours, Blackburn descended of his own will. Warden Joseph E. Ragen said that Convict Blackburn refused to fiv e any reason for his act. The water tower is 90 feet tall. Blackburn is shown tn middle of tower oatwalk. v Rufus School Dates Many Spring Events Mrs. Martha Brady, principal of Rufus school, has announced dates of the spring school activ ities. The PTA are sponsoring a dinner to be held May 7. Letters for school -activities will be awarded at-this dinner. The spring school dance will be April 28. Lunch will be served at intermission time by the PTA. Two one-act plays are io be presented by . Rufus school on Friday, May 4. " "T , Miss Vivien Trounce will pre sent her pupils in a piano recital at the school house May 15. The Home Economice class will present a style show, but no definite date has been announced. Final examinations will b e May 21 and 22 and on May 23 will be the picnics for the different divisions o f'th e school. Commencement for the high school and eighth grade will be on Thursday, May 24 and school dismissed on the 25th. * * ♦ ♦ Thursday night at 7 o’clock the juniors and seniors were hosts to the rest of the high school and some invited guests at a party at Rufus school. FOR A f^ L LEGION AUXILIARY TO SEND JUNE SHEERER TO GIRL STATE CAMP ihirteen women attended the special American Legion Auxil iary meeting a t the home of Mrs. Mollie McLachlan oh the evening of March 28. Mrs. Frank von Borstel was a visitor representing the George Beil Unit and brought a box of home made chocolates to pay a wager that her unit would reach their quota of paid up member ship before the Chris Schultz unit reached theirs. - .After the business was finished the ladies adjourned to the Le gion hall where they enjoyed a birthday party with the Legion. Mrs. Richard Brtickert furnished a beautifully decorated cake for the occasion. - On April 4, twelve members of Chris Schultz Unit drove out to Mrs. Bruckert’S home for the regular meeting. It was voted to send June Shearer to Girl’s State in June. This honor is always conferred on a girl in her junior year ’of high school. The local unit has sent a girl to Girl’s State for several years. Mrs. Claire. Axtell won the door prize and Mrs. Dick Morgan the game prize. ' • Refreshments of upside-down cake and ice cream were served by the hostess and the president, Mrs. McLachlan. The next meeting will be an all-day afair with potluck dinner at noon at Mrs. J. F. Noonan’s home at wjiich time the ladies will work on poppies for the an nual poppy sale. Cal., where Mr. Engles is employ ed at a sawmill. The hall was decorated a t one end with a rainbow made of color ed crepe paper and at the end of the rainbow was a pot of gold be hind which were the gifts. Bou quets Qf spring flowers were used about the room. Mrs. Lester Bar num presented the bride-to-be with a tea rosebud corsage. A program was given consist ing of a tap dance by Deanna Martin and Jeanie and Susan Baumgartner, w ith Mrs. Ruggles Playing for them; a reading, “Marriage Advice,” by Mrs. Ber nard Martin, and two piano solos, “O Promise Me" and “The Sun shine of Your Smile,” by Mr«. Ruggles. ‘ About a dozen bride’s books were assembled by the guests In different groups. They were giv en a book and some magazines from which to clip her picture, his picture, first meeting, friends, marriage, honeymoon, home and family. The group winning the prize were Mrs. T. M. Rolfe, Mrs. Wallace May and Miss Connie Wilson. Mrs. Ruggles then escorted Miss von Borstel to the gift table where she opened the many love ly gift packages for the pleasure of the guests. She was assisted by Mrs. Donald von Borstel and Mrs. Sammy Holmes. • Refreshments of cookies, ice cream, tea and coffee were serv- ed from a table decorated with a bouquet of spring flowers.
