Now, Red Cross girls and Leathernecks (upper left) swim and sun themselves at leisure. A short tim e ago, swimming and bathing came under the heading of “hazardous occupations* and a Marine m achine-gunner (lower left) guarded his buddies from Jap intrusions as they washed Sn Guadal waters. T he beautiful tropical beach scene (above) now provides a more peaceful setting for the quartet of Leathernecks who loll in tho sun than it did for Marines who w e r e on t h e s a m e b e a c h three years ago. At that tim e, the beach was covered with dead Japs, half-burled in the sand ( b e lo w ) . The beaches are washed clean n o * — and Guadalcanal today is a rear base, far removed from the fighting front.
