AMERICA THE WORLD FEEDER. The countries of Europe are gradually running out of food reserves. The war which is now in its second year, has prevented the raising of normal crops, so that the usual reserve at this period of the year is not on hand, and as the months advance and the consumption of food proceeds, supply will be lessened. The best way it can be figured is that tl e European nations must call upon the United States for food supplies or go hungry. The demand of Europe upon our granaries and fields, will be greater than ever before, and with these foodstuffs and farm products going awav from our shores, does it not mean that prices will soar here at home? The United States will have to feed the world, and th at is where our billion- bushel wheat crop will come in handy. PRESIDENT WILSON AS A LOVER. When the announcement was sent broadcast over the telegraph wires that president Wilson had also won a signal victory in his courtship with a merry widow, the country rejoiced midst its surprise. All mankind loves a lover, and in the case of the president of the United States, the people were prepared to lend their acclaim, and bid him well- But there can be too much publicity given to even a good thing. The news papers and the press associations have hit upon every trivial move that the president and Mrs. Galt have made to elaborate upon it and to make it appear as of momentous importance. Their loving is being very much overdone in the newspapers, and a more dignified handling of their happy affair would offset what nine out of ten women now call “ gush.” If this lavish handling of inconse quential matters iu connnection with the betrothal of President Wilson and Mrs. Galt is to continue until December, we make a motion that they get married m :.‘. week and put an end to it. The most solid book in the world, says the Fine Arts Journal of Chicago, is in the Field museum, it has only ten pages, but they consist of exqui sitely engra\ed slabs of the finest jade. The book was made by order of the Chinese Emperor Kank Usi (1002-1722) and Is a family document of great his toric value. The text is In Chinese and Manchu, with elaborate ornamen tation on the tltst and last pages. It Is believed that this precious relic was turned into cash through the ne cessities of the deposed imperial fam ily, which has been in retirem ent with a limited income since the establish ment of the Chinese republic. S o c ra te s and H i s P u p il. There is a story told of Socrates that he once asked a self confident pupil to draw a line and, the line being com pleted. to construct a square upon it The youth did as directed. “Now.” said the sage, “make me a square twice the size of the one before you.” “That is easy,” replied the novice, and forthwith, producing the line so that It was double the length of the first, made another square. Very carefully Socrates proved to the now crestfallen follower that the new square was real ly four times the size of the original. Next he explained how the task ought to have been done and concluded thus: “Our first step to wisdom Is ever a knowledge of our own ignorance." R u s s ia n P o lice S t o r y . Shortly after he found that the pocketbook. still containing the original notes, was not lost, but had slipped into the lining of his fur coat Naturally he asked whence had come the restored money. lie dis covered that the police rather than admit failure had collected the money among themselves. — Dundee Adver tiser.
