6A • July 3, 2015 | Cannon Beach Gazette | cannonbeachgazette.com Fountain honors legacy of James Harley Sroufe By Ruth Zschomler Cannon Beach Gazette A 40-year-old memorial fountain in Cannon Beach is relocating to a more prom- inent home. The Cannon Beach public art commit- tee repaired and moved the Sroufe Memorial Fountain next to the Cannon Beach Library. The fountain will be more visible to the public on the city-owned property ad- jacent to the sidewalk. The fountain, a piece of public functional art and memorial to James Harley Sroufe, was originally erected in the city park that Sroufe helped cre- ate, moved near the Christian Conference Center for a time before moving to the most current location between the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce and the tennis courts on East Second Ave- nue. The public art committee, an informal city committee composed of local artists, gallery owners, members of the parks and communi- ty services committee and other locals, decided the out- of-the-way location wasn’t doing justice to the legacy of Sroufe and proposed the re- location to the city. Members of the committee had hoped to have the project ¿nished by April, before tourist sea- son began, but the project wasn’t approved until May and started the ¿rst week of June. The project was de- RUTH ZSCHOMLER PHOTO FOR CANNON BEACH GAZETTE Workers in front of the library will be the new site of the Sroufe Memorial Fountain. layed when the library board decided to include a land- scape update plan with the fountain relocation, accord- ing to Public Works Director Dan Grassick. “The fountain operating mechanism was removed, repaired and re-installed. The exterior surface was cleaned and polished,” Grassick said. “The project will be ¿n- ished in time for our annual Fourth of July weekend used book sale,” Library Manager Buddie Anderson said. According to Anderson, the library covered the cost of the landscaping, landscap- er designer Beth Holland handled the design and in- stallation of the new soil and plants and the city covered the cost of the installation of the fountain, plumbing, and excavating. “The city has been so generous working with us to make this whole project possible,” Anderson said. Project manager Tracy Sund was instrumental in getting this relocation done, Anderson said. The landscape design in- cludes a new stone pathway and a complete array of full plants and ornamental grass- es. “It is a work in progress,” Holland said. The drinking fountain hasn’t worked for some time now, but “should be a fully functional water fountain when the install is complet- ed,” Grassick said. The new installation in- cludes an underground steel support frame to handle the weight of the marble struc- ture. Harold Van Winkle, President of Cannon Beach Construction, the contrac- tors hired for the job, said the fountain is very heavy and delicate to move. As a result, it needs the stainless steel frame to sit in to keep it stable and also to be able to remove the fountain if re- pairs are needed. Van Winkle said the base of the fountain weighs around 600 pounds. “There is also a well underneath that can be ac- cessed through the step area to repair plumbing issues that may arise,” Van Winkle said. This is something the fountain previously lacked. Van Winkle said the fountain installation should last for many years without major issues. The artistic drinking fountain was designed by the late John Yeon, former Port- land architect and Cannon Beach resident and was built and dedicated in the honor of Sroufe, another prominent Cannon Beach citizen, short- ly after his death in 1964. Sroufe owned Sroufe’s Grocery on North Hemlock Street from 1951 until his death, and was a member of the city parks committee. The inscription on the marble base of the fountain reads: “Drink to the memo- ry of Harley Sroufe. A toast from his friends. 1964.” Now, more people will con- tinue to bene¿t from Sroufe’s legacy. Former Mayor Mike Morgan was involved in the initial stages of the re- location process. “Although the memorial was to Harley Sroufe, his wife, Margaret, was a volunteer at the library for many years,” he said. “The new location is ¿tting in all aspects.” The city will continue to maintain the fountain, according to an agreement between the city and the li- brary. “The library is honored to be the new home for the Sroufe Memorial Fountain,” Anderson said.
