THE CONDON GLOBE HARTSHORN & HARLAN riMitii. . FRIDAY, JULY 8. 1910. SUBSCRIPTION PRICE, 11.30 PIR TSAR. toeand at fuetolBee ee Beroaa-ctaa Batter. Pabllarwd Krtrj FrMav. BUSINESS CONDITIONS The only unfavorable element in the situation is the unfavor able attitude of federal lawmak ers and state officials towards the railways and the spirit which would prevent the com panies from moderately advanc ing their charges to offset the increased cost of operation. When the manufacturer is oblig ed to pay higher prices for raw material and increased wages he does the only possible thing in the circumstances and corres pondingly raises the charges for his product The railways are obliged to pay increased prices for supplies and higher wages, and it is only reasonable that they should get more for what they sell, namely, transporta tion. That they are impelled to raise, their charges is plain from current traffic returns showing increased gross takings, while costs of operation have increased in still greater ratio, with re sulting decrease in net earnings. Unless the greatest of all in dustries is permitted to prosper the county cannot be prosperous, This is a sort of topsy turvy world. No one seems to be sat isfied. One man is struggling to get justice, and another is fly ing from it One man is saving up to buy a house and another is trying hard to sell his dwell ing for less than it cost to get rid of it One man is spending all the money he can earn in tak ing a girl to a theatre or show and sending her valuable pres ents in hopes that he may event ually make her his wife, and his neighbor is spending all the gold he ha? saved trying to get a di vorce. One man keeps a pistol to protect himself against burg lars, while his neighbor doesn't keep one for fear of shooting himself or some member of the family. One man pays for his paper in advance because he can read it with a great rel'sh, while another takes it four or five years without paying one cent for it, and enjoys it hugely all the while. Surely a queer old world this is. That high prices for food pro ducts are driving many people back to the farm is the belief of those who have given the matter attention. It is contend ed that not for years has the movement been so noticeable as now. All parts of the Pacific Northwest are being benefited, it is said, by this desertion of the cities and return to the soil. Confidence is expressed that this will balance production and con sumption and bring prices of farm products down to lower levels. The railroads in the North west are making preparations to move the 1910 fruit crop, which will be the largest ever harvest ed in this section. With many acres of new orchards in bearing and fine crops on the old ones, the output from the fruit grow ing sections will tax the capaci ty of the railroads to supply re frigerator cars, kailroad traffic officials have been making care ful surveys of the orchards in Eastern Washington, Oregon and Idaho, with a view of Bizing up the situation, and have order ed more cars than were ever be fore used in bandlirie the croD. j Salem, the capital city, will hold its annual cherry fair on July 7, 8 and 9. The event promises to be a big affair and is being widely advertised. Peo ple from the entire valley will attend and unusual preparations are being made to entertain them. There will be keen com petition between the valley coun ties for prizes in the cherry ex hibits and amusement features of the fair will be better than ever. Attention is called by the Ore gonian to the growth of the live stock ' industry in the Pacific Northwest On one day of last week it says ten carloads of wheat were received at Portland and 40 carloads of livestock. It is maintained that the stock grower will become a more im portant factor in the prosperity of the state than the wheat grower within the coming ten years. Then there will be more wheat grown than at present but the livestock industry will have expanded to a remarkable degree by that due to Port land having the greatest stock yards and packing plant on the Pacific Coast This means much to the city's future, it is believ ed. Together with the Great North em, the Northern Pacific will carry on a work of exploitation of Oregon. Writers and publi city men are now being enlisted by the line to work up material to be used throughout the coun try in spreading the knowledge of Oregon broadcast With the Hill lines activity engaged in the work of publicity, large results can be expected. Large appropriations for Ore gon waterway improvements are available by the passage of the Rivers and Harbors bill by the recent Congress. More than ?1,000,000 will be spent in per fecting the jetty at the mouth of the Columbia River and adrii tional funds are provided for dredging the Lower Willamette and Columbia Rivers. The im provement of the upper Willam ette and Columbia is provided for, asjs the Celilo Canal, which gets $600,000. Portland ends the cereal ship ping year May 31, holding sec ond place in the entire country as a wheat exporting city. New York alone has a greater volume to its credit During the past 12 months Pcrt'ard has sent away 6,350,033 bushels of wheat, valued at $5,791,304. The assembly seems to be a joke in Wheeler County also. One committeeman present out of thirteen. Wouldn't that make you laugh?
